Irish Shillelagh fighting
« on: September 30, 2005, 11:13:27 AM »

When talking about stick fighting, especially here in America, I personally believe that the Shillelagh needs it's place at the table. The Shillelagh was originally a weapon used by the Irish after English law made it illegal for Irish Catholics to own and carry blades. The Irish naturally brought it with them to America. When in the 1800's the major East coast cities needed full time police to keep the peace, they turned to the Irish gangs and stick fighters. The original Irish police officers had two sticks they used, a day stick and a larger night stick.
The Shillelagh is a very quick, effective style of stick fighting, as evidenced by those early police men. Not to mention most people think it is a walking stick, so you can carry it everywhere. Not to mention, it's fun. At least to us crazy Irish boys.

Hey Jim, thanks for the kind words. Both of those links are excellent sources, another one is Sifu Glenn Doyle's site. His is the Clan Doyle style that dates back 17 generations I believe.

We'll be going over two kinds of Irish Stick Fighting, Shillelagh and Great Stick, and Pre-Marquis of Queensbury Pugilism. It'll be alot of fun!

Raswic,
Do you have a site?

I saw the seminar at Jim McCanns site too late to attend but I am interested in any future seminars or training materials.

The thing about shelleles is that they are weighted at one end and pack a wallop when your grandparent insists on disiplining you with it.

thank bod my Irish Grand dad never owned one or was all that into disiplining.
his nose was flat from fighting as a kid though.

Ide rather change it to rule of wrist!

I know what you mean, it's hard to show the Irish stuff through still pics as it contains alot of moulinettes or twirlling of the stick. But I tend to find more similarities then differences. Both styles are based on swordplay, from what I understand (honestly don't know much about the Philipino styles). Do they hold thier sticks at the 1/3 point in the Philipino styles? In the European styles that is a strictly Irish thing. I take it you are familiar with Glenn Doyle? Great guy and a badass stick fighter. I'm still working on his stuff. I hope to have him down sometime for a seminar. Another great Irish stick game is to knock the hat off the other guys head. Or, you each hold a beer in your off-hand and have to knock the beer out of the other guys hand. You can't spill your own though. ;D Ever play Purring?

In Phillipino Stick fichting we hold the stick with half a hands length left on the holding length of the stick. thats called the punyo. We fear that if some one grabs it its a game of tug of war. plus when they used maschetes and bolos the chances of a weapn disarm where decreased if the enemy didnt have a good place to gram.

the twirling you talk a bou is also similar to doblate with is a wrist twirling action to alow for quick circulat strickes.
I wonder do you know any collar and elbow wrestling?
the hat game is fun but the beer one I am afraid ill have to wait till im 21 to participate in.
Good luck in keeping the Irish fighting heritige alive.
by the way to help Irish Tactics consisted of hit and run.

Im so proud of Irish cunning.  ;D
