All good comments.

For what it is worth, I always kept my guard up in the ring against any strike because even by accident people would kick low to my groin or strike towards my throat.

Great point re muscle memory and that a surprise attack is tough.

Look forward to learning from you all.
This is exactly what I said to my friend who was debating this with me recently.  Yes, in the ring there are certain moves that are "illegal", or not condoned.  But a true fighter knows that you have to be ready for whatever may come.  It should be expected that even in a ring, you're fighting and that you may possibly have to deal with a move that is not allowed or expected.  Getting struck with any "tool", to me, is a reasonable expectation in ANY confrontation.  Our particular convo focused on boxing and "dirty moves".  He got mad when I said that even a boxer should be prepared and expect to receive dirty blows.  Totality in fighting....its the only way to be a true fighter.
