Ground Knife Fighting
« on: October 11, 2005, 07:42:20 PM »

Toniight in class we did some kill shot sparring then in the clutches of sparring followed by ground knife sparring.
Let me lay out the scenario.
I have 2 new guys in class. One has been training in BJJ for about 1 1/2 years at another school.
He is a recent convert.
The other is a TKD with some Kali. No ground experience at all Just started with me 2 weeks ago.
One guy starts on top or in the guard both with knives.
The TKD guy with no experience on the ground won everytime!
He improvised overcame and adapted better then the classically trained ground fighter.
Just letting you know.

The "rules" of knife groundfighting are so different than unarmed groundfighting that the experienced BJJ has a lot of muscle memory to overcome.  I have found, though, that no matter whether you are fighting with hands, guns, knives or sticks on the ground, there is no substitute for basic ground maneuvers:  shrimp, hip heist, pelvis bump, reverse shrimp, scissors, live/dead feet etc.
