training with sticks
« on: November 02, 2004, 01:31:03 AM »

Hello,

I know that hock highly advocates hitting something to experience impact and develop power. I have a heavy bag that i have started hitting with my sticks to develop forearm strength and endurance and power.

What do other exercises do you guys use to improve your hitting power and endurance with a stick.

Thanks
John

Other options- war post, tire dummy, heavy rope, and a partner dressed up in a padded suit (FIST, Redman, Kwon, etc.), just to name a few.

Hope this helps,
Steve

Trees, tyres, mannequin dummies, posts, other sticks, Thai pads, kick shields and people!

Cheers

Sorry Jeff, it’s the Brit way to spell tire as in “car tires.”  I’m sure you have wailed on a few in your time!

A good tire dummy is easy to make,
 - Get 5 - 7 tires, dependant on how tall you want it.
 - Stack all the tires but 1 on top of each other
 - stand the last one up on top of the pile
 - tie them all together with some rope.
Proceed to beat the hell out of it.

There are some fancier ways like burying a post and all, but I like to be able to move it around a little.

I put a WEKAF helmet inside the top tire so I can kinda visualize a head.

Great way to take out a little frustration.

Be ready for some blisters on your hands until you get used to hitting full force for awhile.
Plus you will learn to hold your stick tight.... That keeps it in your hand, and cuts down on the blisters too.

Have fun and keep up the hard training.

P.S. Joe.. Gotta go with Jeff on this one.. Y'all talk funny..  :-)

Dean.
