Very nice clip.

Nice because it's educational. Nice because the cop had good technique, I think - pinning the arm from the outside and attempting to move behind him. Nice because he used less than lethal option and felt good about it. Good attitude to have.

Good thing he wasn't over trained in knife disarms tho. He could have started doing all kinds of hong-kong-fooey on that big guy, but instead went for the weapon which was his best option.

Hock, reminds me of the story you told us in London about how you rushed to take on a knife weilding guy (on his front lawn I think) While your partner drew his weapon and was wondering what the hell you were doing taking up a fighting stance in front of the bad guy.

Actually, he really didn't pay attention. I was wondering what the hell I was doing. But that was my first response after training daily for about three weeks for a 3rd degree Kempo black belt test. It made me snap into a fighting stance, like in a movie. I realized that too much, intensive hand training made me to hand oriented, as opposed to mixed weapon oriented.

(on this, please read...

The cop in this clip could have been cold-cocked by the free hand of this big SOB! And the SOB could have easily changed hands. Untrained people can do this instinctively.

Obvious a suicide-by-cop situation. The cop is very lucky.
When he saw that knife he should have tasered or shot him ASAP.

No disrespect to the officer, as he did well enough to go home.

But that guy was trying to kill nobody but himself.  I saw no real attack there at all in my view.

I agree with Bri Thai. It didnt' appear that the guy was in any way trying to attack anyone. But.... appearences can be deceiving!( I just made that up)

I disagree, as an officer that officer was in a deadly force situation and it appeared he didn't recognize that fact thank god he came out ok I just hope he doesn't do that again. They were in contact distance and the guy had a knife, that is a shoot situation no doubt.

OK fire away

I'm not saying that the officer's life wasn't in danger at all.  The knife guy could have turned on the aggression and killed him at any moment.

I am saying that he didn't.  Personally I would have pulled the gun, pointed it at him and, on any failure to do what I said whatsoever, I would have shot him dead.

I have to disagree on the assailants ability to cold cock him. He was in no position and the officer moved behind him almost immediately. His free hand was not in a spot where he could have mustered the strength for a hard shot and it would have been telegraphed a mile away.  I do believe the guy was suicida,l not heading for a killing spree but the officer grabbed the knife hand wrist. Moved out of range etc. Personally, I think besides the option of shooting the guy it was handled pretty well. Other options, not a ton and you can't argue with the outcome.

Yeah right.....but if it was in the UK the officers shouldn't be armed......    ::)

Keep to apples OR oranges....don't argue from both sides....

What would a UK officer do?   Would your rather be a US officer with this option of deadly force?

Actually I have faced people armed with knives, broken bottles and other sharp implements, armed with nothing more than a little old piece of wood (though the tools we have are better now).  And, like we saw in other threads, hardly any UK officers get killed compared to their USA cousins.

But I would prefer to debate in a friendly way.  If you cannot be friendly just because someone disagrees with ya, maybe you should look at yourself.

Good day.   :)

You stated:  "Personally I would have pulled the gun, pointed it at him and, on any failure to do what I said whatsoever, I would have shot him dead."

This is not an option for UK police....give another option....you wouldn't give this option to UK police.  ::)

What would you like to debate in a friendly way?    Ninor and I do it all the time....pick a topic.

and just why am I being dragged into this?? ;D  Bloody hell, mesquite eating, baccy chewing, whiskey drinking Texans and bloody pommy cops....

I guess this begs the question..

If a Texan Professor and an English cop jumped off the Eiffel Tower at exactly the same second in time which one would hit the ground first?
