Hi Bri

I would be interested if there are any real stats for deaths caused by throat strikes.  I am not debating the possibility of these shots leading to death, but it seems that people love to talk about moves that break arms, dislodge eyes, break necks and so forth equating to "Lethal Strikes."  I read a book recently by an ex-spy who says that a palm strike to the nose will kill your opponent; a double ear clap (done correctly) can cause death; a double axe-hand to the carotid arteries will be fatal.  Most insiders I have met over the years say that this is just so much B.S., but yet many mature adult teachers (many who have never been in a fight) insist that these moves work and will cause fatalities.  Of course this explains why so many  LEO & Military Defensive Tactics Programmes are so lame.

Get this- a friend of mine who just returned from Iraq told me that if an insurgent throws a gernade at you, the minute it leaves his hand you no longer have the right to shoot him.  Can you believe that?  Or this tag line for the Community Police in London- You'll protect members of the public, but without any physical intervention.  It's a funny old world!

Ciao

Joe

Hi Joe!

We get well equipped to deal with grenade threats.  As you say, the baton cannot be used to strike the attacker once he has let go of the grenade.  But you can stilll use it as a baseball bat in order to bat the grenade back to him...... ;D

Nope, I have no scientific stats whatsoever re the throat strikes!  It's all anecdotal, along with the fact that the wind pipe is both soft, squishy and absolutely vital to life.  Personally I'd only use the strike to the throat in the most urgent of circumstances but it is a judgement call that we all have to make for ourselves.
