Calibre Press...Gone?
« on: January 05, 2006, 07:35:13 PM »

Heard some  disturbing news this afternoon that the pioneer training company Calibre Press, Street Survival, has folded.

I have not received a weekly bulletin form them in some time, now that I think of it, and their webpages are...gone!?

Anybody else hear this? Have news?

Yeah, I just now got it up but before several versions were down.

I know they have lost all their "flagship" people.

And they have had a huge seminar schedule and they show nothing for 2006, and usually that is their bread and butter. They would be months ahead and show nothing for January, least of all 2006.

Also, entry to their forum and contact page and so forth, just kicks you right back to
the main page...

I wonder of anyone knows anything about this.

Now that you mention it, I haven't received one of their "newsline" emails for at least two months now.

Of course, the fact that it took two months and this post to realize I hadn't gotten it should say something.  It seemes like the last bunch were becoming nothing more than advertisements for their seminars and instructors and less to do with actual information, like they originally were.

Sad to see them go. I still own 2 of their videos ("Hostage Officer Survival" and "Defense Against Edged Weapons") and occassionally watch them as a refresher. Still some good material in there.

They're back.

They have posted a full slate of police-only, street survival seminars for 2006.

The insiders word is that the instructors last year or so are not to popular or special and overall they dwindled off. Couple that with several corporate ownership changes, they lost their footing.

Seems that they are revving up with some new instuctors and guests (Verbal Judo's Thompson) and some others for a return. Will the weekly police-only bulletins return?

Message from the re-constituted Calibre Press...

"I'm Scott Buhrmaster, Managing Editor and Director of Training for PoliceOne, which, through its commitment to officer safety and information, has grown to a following of more than 400,000 officers worldwide. It is with great excitement that I announce that PoliceOne has taken over all operations of Calibre Press and will now be the guiding force behind The Street Survival Newsline and The Street Survival Seminar.

In addition, PoliceOne Senior Contributor and Director of Special Projects, Chuck Remsberg, who co-founded Calibre Press and authored the bestselling "Street Survival" series, will be rejoining the Calibre Press team. From its inception in 1980 through 2000, Chuck was instrumental in building Calibre Press and helping it change the face of law enforcement training. As for myself, I am a 10-year Calibre veteran before coming to PoliceOne. I am especially pleased to once again be Managing Editor of the Street Survival Newsline which I co-founded in 1995 and managed for its first five years.

With the help of the world class skills of the existing Calibre Press team-including Street Survival Seminar instructors Dave Smith, Jim Glennon, Ray DeCunto and Betsy Brantner-Smith-we're reinvigorating the programs that made Calibre Press the most recognized and respected officer survival organization in the world.

Today marks the reintroduction of the Street Survival Newsline beginning, appropriately enough, with a powerful 3-part series written by Chuck Remsberg titled, "Do you know the best tactics to help a fellow officer-or yourself-survive serious injury?" Over the next three editions, you will learn the common mistakes officers make in the face of serious injury and how to avoid them. You will also learn what you can and should do to help a seriously injured officer stay alive."

Stay safe,
Scott Buhrmaster

(Just a quick reality check...we recently advertised with Police One and got an inside look at their operation and sales and adverstising. We know their viewership numbers, etc...This 400,000 number they claim...I don't know about exactly?

My webpage actually has better viewership than theirs. No brag, just fact, and we are not  kings of any hill, by any means.

Ad expense was phenominal. If you are like a major gun company, it is pocket money, but to small product and training companies, it is ridiculous to pay what they ask for what exposure you actualy get.

So, we'll see what they can do! they have a full weekly slate of Calibre Press/police only seminars for the year, and maybe it will be a positive little monpoly. PoliceOne is also hooked up with Police Officer Magazine.

Somebody is investing some experiment money somewhere....
