Protest in London about the hunting ban!
« on: September 18, 2004, 08:30:46 PM »

Did anybody check the news a couple of days ago and witness the riots in Parliament Square over the hunting ban?  London’s finest opened up a “big” can of arse whooping with their sticks.  In fact from the footage I saw, it looked as though the protesters never broke through the police first line of defence.  They all displayed quality command of their weapons.  Interestingly, Hock’s curriculum is now being interwoven into the London Metropolitan Police Defensive Tactics manual.  I am glad to see it is making a big difference!

Ciao

Hi Joe,

No, I did not catch the protest footage.  What length of stick were they using?  Did they have some kind of shield in one hand and stick in the other?
Any grabbing and striking going on?

Hi Mike...
As far as I remember, I think the footage  I saw were just policemen with standard size riot batons (no expandables in view).  I don't think they had any riot helmets or shields.  I did see some grabbing and striking, but most of the time the cops were pushing them back into the crowd.  With that in mind, they were wailing hard-core!

Hi Guys,
The sticks the Met use are either the ASP gravity friction lock baton, or as you saw an acrylic patrol baton of either 22", 24", or 26", these are usually carried at public order events because of retention difficulties whilst wearing big gloves with the gravity batons. I haven't seen the footage but all us Met DT guys are sitting under the table waiting for the PC fall out from our lords and masters in the ivory tower.
See you soon Joe, take care...Jim S

Great to hear from you and welcome to the forum!  I am sure your expertise in British Policing will enlighten many who read here.  Thanks for coming aboard mate.  See you soon, Hock's back in March!  Tell Scott I want that picture.

All the best
