Biggest Robbery in Britain

Armed Gang Nets Millions
Updated: 23:40, Wednesday February 22, 2006

An armed gang has stolen up to 40m from a security depot in Kent.

The thieves posed as police to abduct the manager of the Securitas depot in Tonbridge and his family.
The manager was pulled over in his car on Tuesday night by what he thought was undercover police.

He was then handcuffed and taken to the Vale Road security depot at around 1am, Kent Police said.

At least six men, some armed with handguns, then threatened and tied up around 15 members of staff.

The gang loaded a substantial amount of cash into a white lorry before driving off at about 2.15am. Police were alerted about an hour later when the staff activated an alarm. The gang had reportedly threatened the safety of the manager's family during the ordeal.

However, no one was hurt in the robbery. The Bank of England said at least 25m had been stolen but sources said the true figure could be as high as 40m. This would make it the biggest ever armed robbery in Britain.

A Bank of England spokeswoman said: "The Governor today asked for a review of the security arrangements for the storage of banknotes."

Kent Police urged anyone with information to telephone their special incident room on 01622 652 361 or 652 366.

Police investigating the case are focusing on a group of martial arts fanatics, Sky News has learnt.

Detectives believe that with the investigation into Britain's biggest cash robbery moving at such a fast pace, the robbers are making mistakes.

Cash totalling 1.3m was found in a white Transit van in an Ashford car park on Friday.

Forensic tests are being carried out on the guns, balaclavas and flak jackets also found in the back of the van.

Police have also recovered a fork-lift truck.

Two men, aged 55 and 33, arrested on Saturday morning in the Maidstone area have now been released on police bail, along with a 49-year-old man held later in the day.

The new arrests bring the total number made in connection with the inquiry to 11.

Police are continuing to ask the public for information, and have received more than 1,300 calls to two hotline numbers: 01622 652 361 or 01622 652 366.
