Knife pimp

Alright,

Is slow....

What knife do you carry with you most of the time...?  Why to you carry it?  For those outside of the US, can you carry? What are the regulations.

Some of you know that I have a toolbox full that I bring the PAC events.   I'll refrain from posting a photo shoot....yet....   8)

The knife that spends the most time with me is my EKI SOCFK-A, usually deep pocketed so the sheeple and uniform Nazi's don't spot it...

When not in uniform, an EKI Black Hawk (for my right pocket) and an EKI Commander (lefty model, for my other side).

In PT Gear or sometimes in either of the above situations, an EKI LaGriffe, although I am hoping to upgrade this to "HideAway" in the future.

Why do I carry these? To cut things... fingers and teeth just don't work very well cutting cardboard, rope, opening packages, etc. I like the SOCFK because it is under the assinine 3.5" limit here at USNA and it has the wave. The Black Hawk and Commander have the wave as well... the former is pretty much the "perfect" tactical folder (in my opinion) and the latter is a lefty, so it carries perfectly in my left pocket. The LaGriffe on its ball-chain suspended kydex sheath is convenient, suprisingly fast to deploy (even from inside a shirt), and small enough to almost forget you have it on when PTing, lounging around, sleeping, etc.

I carry either the Spyderco Chinook (usually) or the Cold Steel Recon 1 (Japanese version), along with either a Spyderco Native or Delica.

I carry the Kershaw "Scallion" as my everyday use knife for cutting boxes, twine, etc.  I really enjoy the Kershaw, it keeps an edge well, and has a single finger deploy, rather than thumb.  When traveling or going into town, I carry a Spyderco Gunting.  I like the way that knife fits in my hand, as well as the possibility to use the gunting part of the knife for strikes with the blade still closed.

I really love my Benchmade 705.  For most of you guys, it's a bit small, but it wears well, and is very invisible in most carry situations.  The lock is rocking, and it's quiet to open and close.  one handed, and solid.  I lost it, and was about to order another, except get the 710, but the guy at the resteraunt found it, and so i recovered it the next visit at that resto.  Benchmade has very very good gear.  For the fun and games day, I carry a huge tactical folder.  the REKAT Sifu.  This thing will lop off an arm.  It's recured and sharp as hell, and is solid as well.  Large and sharp.  it's like pulling out a .357 here in Europe.  The laws here say that you cannot carry a tactical folder, so i don't.  I carry my utility blade.

I carry the the Benchmade 805 TSEK (Tactical Safety Equipment Knife) as my primary and secondary backup knife.  It performs well for a number of tasks around work and home, travels well (comfortable) and is an excellent defensive combatives knife.  It holds up well to abuse and is easily resharpened to a fine edge.  The steel carry-clip is movable for tip-up, tip-down, and side-to-side carry options.  The shape of the handle lends itself well to stabbing and hacking control during combative use if ever necessary and has posistioning for more finer control when doing more common tasks around the office and home.  The locking mechanism is strong and the blade opens and closes smoothly and silently.  Everything can be done quickly, quietly, one handed and with either hand while under stress in the indentical manner.  Can you tell I approve of this particular model?  ;D

I hate to chime in like I really have a preference, I'll carry whatever works.  But I do tend toward a Gerber Yari because it's a simple straight edge with a useable striking pommel (kind of hard to find these days).  I didn't like the sheath that came with it, so I had one built for me that is reversed from the factory model.  That way it's ready for a blade-out ice pick grip as I remove it.  And at 4.75" it's just below the legal limit in my state.  I have another Buck straight edge for the under 4" states.  I like to avoid the serated edges.  Oddly enough in my state you can't carry a gun everywhere, but you can carry a knife.  I usually have one or the other, or both.

I've found some $5 commercial kitchen knives from China that have a nice nylon handle that would probably work just as well.  At $5 a piece it wouldn't bother me to lose one.  Or if Hock would ever start selling "The Plumber's Helper" I'm sure I'd buy a few (as long as they didn't cost over $10 each).  In my mind there is no magic that a $500 knife is going to do for me that a $5 kitchen knife won't.  I know a kitchen knife will work, I use them all the time in the kitchen.  They are sharp as heck and they cut through the toughest steaks and fish.  And they are dishwasher safe.  Maybe it's time for a paradigm shift here.  One thing that we don't like to think about, but it is a fact of life: How would your knife look in court as Exhibit A?

I used to carry a 4" knife on planes before September 11.  Now they won't let me carry a knife anymore, but they do hand me an aluminum can shortly after take-off.  Go figure.  I usually have my digital camera in my carry-on bag, and of course I need a 4" mini tripod that just happens to fit into my hand perfectly.  Since 99.9% of the people on any given aircraft have a desire to live, I'd feel better if they handed out knives to everyone on board at the gate.  But I digress.

I carry either a cold steel large clip point voyager, or if it is a special occasion, I have a spyderco that looks "dressy" and blends in with a suit.  Whenever I can, I have a CRKT fixed blade that I wear in a kydex sheath on my belt.  I have never gotten spoken to about this, since in my state, it is legal to wear a "hunting" knife out in the open.  I love Kentucky.

I love my knives!! I really do...I love to hold them, stroke them and ....... OOOOPs. I was talking outloud again  :-[. I actually carry 3 knives. That's right 3. I'm a police officer and I see knives as both tools and for a weapon in bad situations.

I carry a spyderco endura with a stainless 3.5" blade in my right side pocket. My most used knife. I use it for all jobs that one could use a knife for...opening letters, cutting wire or rope, ect...

I carry a SOG flash with a black 3.5" blade on my left side pocket. I have this knife in case I have any number of of bad situations occure. Hopefully, if something bad really does happen, this knife may very well save my life.

The last knife I carry is actually sewn into the neck area of vest; inside my shirt. It is a Columbia River bear claw with a 2" blade. I have this knife incase my hips become trapped and hopefully I can reach my neckline area.

I see all of these knives as possible backup weapons when / if the crap hits the fan.
