Simplify

Through all the years I have trained in Martial Arts I took notes. I would write them down catalog them, type them out, put them in a notebook. I was really impressed with my NOTEBOOK.
I knew 10,000 ways to twist your wrist. 3,200 different variations on an ankle lock. SO WHAT!The more I train the more I realize that sometimes less is more. Study the basics and when when you think you know them study them some more. MIchael Jorden said

I REALLY KNOW THE BASICS."

Remember that an advanced technique is nothing more then a basic technique done really well.

Most advance techniques require that you know the basics to BUILD on them....Thus you re-practice the basics again.

Makes a lot of sense.. ;)

I bet if you were to take that notebook and catagorize everything by principles of movement it would be narrowed down to its most basic.

A principle based system will yeild unlimited applicability, whereas, a technique based system will yeild very specific applicability.

These are just my opinions of course...

I think some people confuse "advanced" with "complicated".  Alot of the people who ask to see "advanced" techniques really want to see a technique with 37 steps just to end up in an armbar.

I once attended a seminar by another RBMA instructor who commented on this issue.  His comment was that advanced techniques are actually understanding the concepts and dynamics of the basics so well that you can apply them easily to any situation, actually making them look less complicated.

In other words, being advanced is making the basics look even easier in dynamic and stressfull situations.

I like the way Hock explains it:  “What may seem like a complicated set of moves, are really just simple ideas piecemealed together.”

First off, we are attracted to complexity. It doesnt have to be complex in order to be usefull.
A serious of moves is good!
When we become xyz sequential things become bad.

There is no such thing as an "advanced knife fight."
...or gun fight.
...or any kind of fight.

We start out simple.
All I ask is that people I worry about is that they constantly "push their envelope," in every good way. Then someday they become very mature and smart, or well...more mature and more smart. Each day may bring a revelation of yesterday's immaturity.

You eventually get so smart, that you make revelations on the need to simplify. That is a very complicated idea, indeed!

Push the envelope... not just horizontally, but vertically also. I think that, as like the biceps will not significantly grow, unless the thigh muscles grow some also, the mind must grow on many, seemingly un-interrelated subjects.

Push your personal envelope. Sounds complicated. But it is simple really.
