Houston man with knife is fatally shot by police
By Lindsay Wise, Jennifer Leahy, Staff
The Houston Chronicle

A knife-wielding man was fatally wounded by two officers who opened fire on him as police said he held his ex-wife hostage in a southeast Houston apartment Friday.

The unidentified man was shot shortly after 5:45 p.m at the Wesley Square apartment complex at 7402 Calhoun. Neighbors at the complex had called police after hearing a dispute at the residence, said Officer Gabe Ortiz, a Houston Police Department spokesman.

When officers arrived, Ortiz said they were met by an off-duty officer, who was working a security detail at the complex. The off-duty officer reported hearing a woman scream, "Don't stab me! Don't stab me!" in the moments before the squad car arrived, Ortiz said.

At this point, the officers walked to the apartment and tried to communicate with the man and woman inside. The officers then heard the man say, "If you come inside, you're dead!" The woman then told police that she was injured and could not come to the door, Ortiz said.

The officers then contacted a supervisor, who called for the SWAT team. While officers waited for backup, Ortiz said the woman repeatedly pleaded with the man not to stab her.

Officers heard the fight moving toward the back of the apartment. The officers decided to force their way into the apartment because they thought the woman's life was in danger. When they entered, they saw the man holding a knife over the woman's head. With guns drawn, Ortiz said the officers ordered the man multiple times to drop his weapon.

Instead, the man turned and rushed at the officers, who opened fire, Ortiz said.

The man was shot in the chest and stomach and transported to Ben Taub Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, Ortiz said.

Police said the woman had bite marks on her face and hands, and a cut on her right hand.

Police said the man and woman, although divorced, were living together.

The names of the officers were not released but Ortiz said both were veteran officers. One officer has worked on the force for 12 years, the second officer, a police sergeant, has six years of service. Friday was the first time they were forced to open fire on a man in the line of duty, Ortiz said.

Both will be placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, as is department policy, Ortiz said.

Ah, more cleansing of the Houston gene pool. But the big question is, what kind of knife did the now dead guy have, and will it be available at a police auction? This the season to re-arm the bus on a budget. Feeding Uncle Nickys army of attack roos is not cheap at best.

These things wouldn't happen in Texas though, right?

Another bite.

It's like shelling pes -  ;D

Mind you, I never said that she couldn't.  And there are two points to consider.

People in the UK are allowed to be armed in a private place (albeit not with firearms of course).  And isn't it you that says violent crimes are rare in Texas because of the right to bear arms?

Sheeeeeit!  I've bitten now!

I stated in the last post only:  "She has the opportunity to legally arm and defend herself....there's a difference."

I never mentioned a gun in my post, but oh well, a bite.....she had a wide range of appropriate and adequate arms in which to choose...as are within her rights as a Texas citizen.

"And isn't it you that says violent crimes are rare in Texas because of the right to bear arms?"

Nope, never said this.  The world is a violent place, and lawful citizens should have the right to adequately defend themselves without the goverment restricting their right to legally do so.

"People in the UK are allowed to be armed in a private place (albeit not with firearms of course)."

The question continues to remain:

"Why not?"

I understand that the people of the UK are different, and may not CHOOSE this option.  But, do you not think that the UK citizen should have the right for make their own choice of safety measures?

I know....the UK likes the self-protection laws as they are written:

A widow who lives alone in a Wiltshire farmhouse has taken to sleeping with a Smith & Wesson Saturday Night Special under her pillow. It belonged to her husband and is more than capable of stopping an intruder, of which she has had three in the last two years.

When she goes shopping in Swindon, she slips a can of Mace into her handbag in case of assault. "Bought it at the ironmongers in Bergerac," she says. "Much more effective than an Asbo."

A senior civil servant, now retired and living in a remote house near Losthwithiel in Cornwall, believes in the efficacy of a small-calibre .22 pistol. It was easy to buy without a licence or proof of identity in rural France, where they are used to kill vermin. The .22 is also an assassin's weapon - once the round has entered the cranium, it will ricochet about as it looks for an exit, devastating brain tissue in its wake.

Many country people consider a sawn-off 12-bore to be the most effective and easily available short-range weapon. A farmer at the Suffolk Show told me that, for added impact, he pierces the crimped end of the cartridge and pours in warm wax which sets and creates a mass of lead shot.

Owning a weapon is becoming a habit for rural homeowners who feel unprotected now that so many police stations have closed.

I have never seen a police car in my village and violent crime in the county, of course, is up. Baseball bats, swords, machetes, Mace and firearms are kept beneath the bed or close to hand by many people.

In spite of Tony Blair's legislation against handguns, lethal weapons are easy to acquire in the countryside. They aren't perceived as a problem because they are kept secretly for

emergencies, rather than to show off to rival drug-dealers. Often they are acquired during military service and handed down through the family. But increasingly they are brought back from Europe by car.

HM Revenue and Customs figures confirm this, showing an increase in weaponry seized at ports. For instance, 842 stun guns were intercepted by searches in 2005, an eight-fold increase year on year.

Most weapons seized are from respectable people worried about their security. Mace, pepper spray and metal-spring batons, illegal here, are easily and lawfully acquired in Europe, while high-calibre pistols can be bought in the Czech Republic.

Scotland Yard recently investigated a French company selling arms through the internet and found that the majority of British customers considered themselves to be law-abiding people, often young couples  worried about personal safety. Police searches of their homes revealed a wide selection of weaponry.

Could we be seeing the first signs of a militant middle class which has had enough and is beginning to arm itself? Perhaps.

For those who cling to the notion that an Englishman's home is his castle, a new weapon will soon be available to help deter intruders. Designed by BowTech in Oregon, USA, the Stryker (left) will be on sale in Europe by mid-January.

It is a precision hunting crossbow complete with a multiple reticule, red dot 1x30 scope nightsight, 175lb draw weight, binary cam technology and the power to skewer a hoodie at 50 metres. It fires bodkin-tipped 425 grain bolts at 405ft per second and will cost a little under £1,000.

Strangely enough, it's legal and fits neatly beneath the bed.

OK....

The question continues to remain:

"Why are citizens not allowed to arm themselves with handguns?

Because we don't want to increase the deaths of innocent people by 500%.

I understand.  "We" think the people are too stupid to be allowed to properly defend themselves.
