knives that open when drawn
« on: January 10, 2007, 07:39:42 AM »

Hi folks

I've seen a kerambit that pops open when you draw it from a pocket.

I like the concept alot.  But the only tiny bit of knife training I've had is with the typical straight blade.  I'm afraid a kerambit would require a whole re-education on my part. So......

Are there any straight bladed knives that can be opened automatically?

If not, how tough of a transition is it from straight bladed stabbing/slashing to kerambit slashing?  Am I even right in assuming a kerambit has minimal stabbing capability?

Spyderco has come out with it's version and the ghetto version I've seen done by a bunch of FMA guys is to hacksaw out the top section of the thumb opening circle on any traditional spyderco knife.  It then snags the pocket on the way out.

Yep, you're right about the kerambit having extremely limited stabbing ability.

The Cold Steel Ti-Lite can also be "waved."

HEY,

That ghetto version  works really well. One of MillDog's students adjusted one of my benchmade & it works better than my Emerson.

I am going to see if he can make me another & also get a trainer made.

be very carefull with this opening tech. i saw a guy do this at speed at a trainning session and the live now open knife went flying to his rear and skidded on the floor for about 20 ft. but hey it looked cool when that didnt happen.

And that's kinda why I guess I am looking for something like the old switchblade, press a button and out pops the blade.

Given my clumsiness, reaching into a pocket will be difficult enough.  Pressing a button with my thumb would be about all I'm capable of.

Switchblades are illegal in most jurisdictions I'm aware of...

Second (even bigger problem) is that they take longer than almost any other knife to open.

Every switchbladed I've seen has a safety catch otherwise the button would get depressed in your pocket and the blade would open inside...bad juju.  So, now you have to reach in your pocket, orient the knife (they don't have pocket clips), remove it, undo the safety, press the release button...while you're doing this your opponent has time to go home, shave, shit and get dressed in something more  comfortable....and, there's still no reason you couldn't drop this knife.

The tactical folder on the other hand tends to be legal, opens as you pull it from the pocket and doesn't have to be oriented as it already is.  One, smooth move and you're good to go, instead of five clumsy ones.

The problem with the guy Gonzales saw was that he was doing it at "speed" instead of doing it smoothly.

I've carried a waved Emerson CQC-7B for around 5 years with no problems.

Been there....done that....got the t-shirt.....

I can open my knife quite well without mechanical assistance.....

                       ......need a dress with that...

I recommend avoiding "customizing" to existing knives for the sake of a quicker opening.  Like most "combat custom" jobs their utility lies in the eye of beholder more than in reality.  If you can't go the price of the Emerson Wave or Cold Steel Ti-Lite which are factory made for kinetic opening then try one of the Kershaw or Ken Onion "assisted opining" knives.
