 - The book of 5 rings
 - The art of war
 - Hock's Knife fighting Encyclopedia

Lots of other system specific books, but I would rather buy the video.

Charles Staley - The Science of MArtial ARts Training

Alright Ninor here's a review for you!

Charles Stley is oneof the more inovative trainers in America (in my opinion).  He was a champion martial arts competitor and has applied his knowledge of physical training to the martial arts and combat sports.  he advocates power moves from Olympic training (clean and snatch, cleans, dead lifts, etc...) that build the necessary speed and muscel specificity that is required by what we do.

This is a trainers book for one, so expect a lot of scientific jargon.  But he writes well and keeps this to a necessary minimum for the average joe (jane) as well.  His process is based on periodization developed by Tudor Bompa (all of his stuff is a good read as well for training science).  Periodization is the breaking down of goals to short, medium and long range goals in order to accomplish the intended result ( strenght improvement, speed training, injury recovery, etc.).  This takes place over several defined phases: prepatory, building muscle, maintainng muscle building specific sports skills, transitioning in the off season.  Great stuff for us once you understand that the development of mini goals in his basic premise you can develop the program.

Staley has some excellent ideas and his book is mandatory for the Internation Sprts Science Association's MArtial Arts TRainer Certification.  I think its one of the best certifications in the business for a personal trainer interested in training martial artists but for me (right now, anyway) its too expensive a course.  Get the book though its about $20.

Have it it!

Really appreciate the fact that somebody is listening. Thanks Professer!
Like to know what Hock recomends as well.

Here is what I am reading now and recomend;
The Bible - for lifes questions and is the top selling book of all time.

Strong on Defense - great, well written by a former Ca. cop on real ugly situations and analyzes each case in what the person did right or wrong.

Gift of Fear - another book that helped me be more aware of games the bad guy uses to lure the unsuspecting and also teaches on listening to your intuition. Used this in my college self-defense courses but now switched to Strong on Defense.

Hocks writings. Any of them. Use the CQC Group Level 1 in my college class as well.

Kill or Get Killed - Unarmed combatives segment was amussing to me but the weapons section was interesting.

On Killing- Very intereisting subject on conditioning to do the ultimate.

Any of Don Dragger's books on historical information of rthe martial arts.

Karate - Do My Way of Life- Very humble writings from a great karate master.

The I Ching, the book of changes. Just started reading it. Why? Help me understand the minds of the great karate masters like the founder of Isshin-ryu.

Read Mr. Marcinko's books. Met him in the grocery store one time. He had long straggly hair and a full beard. Very nive upon meeting him. He looked scarry  :o

Well hears my book list,
Principles of Personel Defense, by Col. Jeff Cooper
Get Tough, by Captain W.E. Fairbairn
Cold Steel, by John Steyers
FM 21-150 1963 Edition, Sold as(Deal The First Deadly Blow) by Paladin press in the 1970's.
Kill or get Killed, by Col. Rex Applegate
The Art of War, by Sun Tzu
Now hear is my review.
Principles of Personal Defense, by Col. Jeff Cooper.
This little 44page booklet is worth it's weight in gold to anyone that has any interest in self defense, it dosn't matter what weapons or lack of weapons you intend to use the seven principles discussed in this book will improve anyones chances for survival in a deadly encounter.
The principles covered are as follows 1 Alertness, 2 Decisiveness,
3 Aggressivenss, 4 Speed, 5 Coolness, 6 Ruthlessness, 7 Surprize
Col. Cooper covers these topics with personel stories as well as documented cases. A lot of this book will be nothing new for the exsperianced Martial Artist or Soilder but will be very informative for the avarage person on the street, a good subtitle might very well be,
The Art of War for the Average Guy.
In Col. Coopers own words, "This booklet was not written for cowards."
It dosen't matter if you love or hate Col. Cooper this is one book you should have in your library.
