I wonder how many knife situations he has been in?  I don;t think he was ever an LEO or soldier but I could be wrong.  A lot of the text seems to be standard blade lore from the perspective of someone who enjoys FMA (don;t we all?) but not necessarily from first hand experience.

I still think the most important thing with using a knife is having the mindset to actually use it, not out of fear but of intention. It would have to be a very hairy situation with few options available for me to consider using a knife or else that is what I have and it just happens.

I no longer teach knife fighting or how to use a knife in my regular classes.  I just get people to slash and stab like a threshing machine and we go from there.  Cheers Redcap.

The Cancer Grip spread fast years back!

On Mike Janich's book cover on Knife Defense
http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0873647408/ref=sib_dp_pt#reader-link

There are four pictures on the cover. In two of the bottom photos, Mike is stabbing people with the high thumb/high ball of the thumb, cancer grip. ANYONE who spent one mere second thinking about this, would know how lame such a stab would be.

Now, Mike is a VERY bright guy (a friend) and after all this cancer grip hubbub, now knows not to do that anymore. But he and many others were caught in the shuffle of looking cool, mimicking the "stars" like the big boys, even so much as to put such cancer grip photos on the cover.

No doubt, Mike saw some "Filipino names" doing this, mindlessly mimiced them, and then his down-liners mimiced him....and the cancer grip grows to the point that you have knife courses where people use the grip regurlarly, thoughtlessly.

(by the way, the guy Mike is stabbing in the fourth, bottom right photo photo is Green Beret Jim Webb)

You have not been corrupted by aspects of the Filipino Martial Arts!

But Ive been corrupted by plenty of other things!

Thanks for the explanation of the cancer grip.  It seems like it looks cool and since it has the ooh-ah factor of being Filipino (it could also be Israelli or Spetznaz or whatever) people mimic it without thinking about it.

What's troubling is this...

This is such a lame knife grip...I would never let myself use this grip in a photo for promo ads and distro. I would say to myslf "jeez, there's that silly-ass, worthless, play, dance, look-FMA-cool, grip" and NEVER use for signature promo advertising.

This smacks to me that the people doing this are very niave...

First knife lesson I ever learned.  At the local gun club with dad, think I was about 12, the county sherrif's department is doing some "police shooting" demo's and other stuff.  Deputy Mike was showing us how police used various techniques to disable cars.  Then he produces a tanto, cancer grip with the edge up, and stabs a car tire.  After the ambulance left everybody started laughing.

Just GET A HOLD OF THE WEAPON!!!  You have 5 fingers, so USE THEM!  The photo in the link was comical.  Nice for a pose, but that's all.  Try the Spartan Combat Drill with that grip method and see how long you're holding your knife.

What the hell???
