Spetznaz are no different from any western special forces units in that they are trained for specific missions to a very high standard, they draw from the best on offer and attract a certain breed. Most special forces blokes I have known, worked with etc have not been the most well adjusted of people as far as normal social graces go. When it comes to fighting, particularly with weapons other than firearms and with their bare hands they are no better or worse than anyone else, just often times more determined, far more confident and rarely hesitate to unload on you.
The Spetznaz blokes putting out DVDs and such are no different to any of us who leverage our military service and experience to lend credibility to our pitch. There is a certain mystique about them and their methods as they are culturally different, but I would suggest they still fight with and against human beings so most things will be more similar than different.
I have trained several special forces people from time to time and I can beat the hell out of them...at the start. That's why they have come to me, because I have skills they want. Then I train them and they get good at what I have taught them and then it is no longer such a walkover! Isn;t that the objective of an instructor no matter the material or the men involved?
As the blurb mentioned, the role of Spetznaz was more recon and surveillance, avoiding a fight rather than picking one. The same role as for the SAS and other elite units. I have found these men to prefer to spend more time on the range and in the killing house than "jap slappin'" and that makes sense to me. Cheers, Redcap
