Dean,

Olangapo has changed a lot since you were there......well....in some places.

There are 4 star hotels on the base now....great seafood resturants right along the beach. I actually watched the cooks go out to the boat and bring in the fish that I had just ordered. Now that's fresh!

We'll have to get you to go along next time we go. Redcap and I are playing with the idea of doing a camp there for his Oz friends. Some Hawiian combatives would be a good addition to the program. That and late nights at the Neptune Club. ;)

Keith,
My time was pre Pinatubo..

I am sure it is quite a bit different today, and since the base closures. Nothing like a cold San Miguel and a fresh fish..  ;)

Sign me up brother..

Actually, it is Olongapo, or it was last time I was there which was in 2005.  The bloke I was working for had just bought a Jap import Ford Explorer and we had to pick that up and another Mitsubishi he bought for his secretary.  These come in as right hand drives to SBMA Special Economic Zone and are converted on base.  Its illegal to import them elsewhere and convert and if you have seen one of the Suzuki Bongo van pickups they call multicabs snap in half you know why.  They bring them in in two pieces and weld them together.  The seats are asymmetrical which means to get to the engine to check oil and water you need to remove the steering wheel, so nobody ever checks the oil and water! And they use them as small jeepneys in some places!  Plus the electrics never swap over properly and so on but they are cheap!

I dived in Subic Bay on several wrecks, viz was not the best and the current made things interesting, as did the bull shark hanging around the USS New York.  Now there are lots of things to do there but Olongapo is dead from a bar scene point of view.  You can get some action at Barrio Barretto or nip up the road to Angeles and bring back some take out. Cheers Redcap

Bongo trucks!  Gotta love them things.  Cheap, small, and indispensable on the streets of Iraq.
