I'm having a debate of sorts with a knife instructor on a forum here in Oz. He posted a one line comment that this proves people who say it never happens are wrong and he is right there but nobody actually said people never get attacked with knives in Iraq, just that there are better ways to manage them than using a knife yourself.
I see the story as proving that even if the MP were the worlds best knife fighter he wouldn't have fared any better. He was unaware he had a knife sticking out of his head, let alone that he had been stabbed! He still relied on his regular tools (mentions his M4 etc) and procedures to control the knifer so he didnt even get to do his Army BJJ!
I am not a fan of knife on knife training anymore. I no longer use the reasoning that to properly defend against one you need to know how to use one like an FMA instuctor uses one. The odds are well against you ever seeing anyone use a knife like that on you etc. Now I just give a training knife to the student and tell them to attack etc.
If anything the story underlines the fact that most victims are unaware they have been stabbed therefore what use are hours of knife duelling practise? (except fun and fitness of course) Those who advocate the knife as a self defence weapon lose some ground too. If it stopped the attack then fine, but if most people are unaware until after, even with one sticking out of their head...you would need to kill instantaneously to get the benefit, surely? Do you really want to kill someone who may just be after your wallet? Wouldn;t a sap or billy club be a better bet? Apart from all of that and having to have the knife in your paw when you need it, you might be allowed to carry one in the USA but not here in Australia and not in NZ or the UK. Cheers, Redcap
