Might be Going Out to Moscow For Work - Safety Precautions ?
« on: February 07, 2005, 02:18:02 AM »

Next month I might be heading out to Moscow to do some IT related work for a client. I have heard so many horror stories of westerners getting robbed, beaten etc.

What are thoughts when it comes to carrying weapons in that part of the world for the purposes of protection,  for instance a telescopic trucheon concealed inside your suite baton, Pepper spray  ?

I took a client to both St Petersburgh and Moscow back in the early nineties.  At that point it wasn't really bad but now it has gone pear shaped mate.

If you absolutely have to go and can afford it get a couple of executive protection people to go with you.

Do not carry your own weapons...unless they're expedient ones which can be explained away as something else (I have a seminar coming up on this in Philly next weekend if you're around)

I have written articles on travel security and it's too lengthy to go into here but if you can't afford protection take sensible precautions.  Lower your profile, leave the Rolex at home, carry local newspapers and cigarettes (if you smoke) so they take you for a local or at least someone who speaks the language. etc

If you want to call me shoot me an email and I can fill in some more gaps for you.

Hope that helps

Prof,

not sure that wouldn't violate copyright.  I wrote it for BMW motorcycle owners magazine.   I never signed a contract so I'm not sure how that applies but I'd hate to get us all sued.

Let me know what you think

Never signed a contract? Can't get sued.

Almost ALL articles are done on "first american publishing rights" virtually by common law, but also by verbage in contracts. Allows for it to resort back to you thereafter.
No contract?
No restraint notification.
No suit.
"Time passed" also counts in the equation.

European magazine?
When was the last international lawsuit for magazine article over safty tips? Probably never. No money in it.

Be sure to book in for another P.I.T. before you go To Moscow.  You need to travel with a walking cane and get yourself one of the Surefire flashlights with 90-120 lumens.  You can also carry a Leatherman Kick, a survival tool with a non-locking knife.  The great thing with that is when the handle is closed the knife cannot fold back on your fingers.  This kit will also be applicable in London as far as legality is concerned.  Get a portable alarm for your hotel door, carry some US dollars with you and don’t go to the brothels or nightclubs.  Get in touch, as there is much more to cover.

Stay safe
