The JKD Straight Lead
« on: May 23, 2008, 03:53:37 PM »

Power Generation
1. Torque / Kinetic Chain > Power moves up the body starting from the feet
2. Inertia/Weight Transfer > As the body moves forward weight is transferred from rear leg to front leg (somewhat of a hop)
3. Impulse Energy > The punch is delivered in a "snappy" fashion it's not "pushy" all energy is transferred into the target

am I correct in my description / understanding of this technique?

Such a loaded question. Not a lot of JKD guys on this forum.

Understanding?  Depends on who taught it to you, I guess.

Seek out Tim Tackett. He'll get you there quickly.

My take on the JKD Straight Lead.
I posted this a few months ago on Tacketts forum. And by the way I'm still improving on this technique.
Bryant jusy come by and we will work it. But the description is pretty close.

I've been fighting for a long time.
Boxing, Kickboxing, MMA, Submission.
You get to a point where you plateau and don't seem to improve as much as you once did.
Well over the past 6 months I have really focused on my JKD particularly my Straight Lead. I've worked with on all the facets of this one technique from training with Tim personally to watching his new DVD. (Awesome) over and over.
What I worked on:
The Fighting Measure.
Economy of motion
Accuracy
Speed
Power
Hitting opponent's intention.
Hitting on opponent's preparation
Hitting on opponent's attack.
Hitting on opponent's recovery
Hitting on opponent's completion.

The bottom line by just working these few components of one technique my skills have improved dramatically.
How do I know?
Well I spar about 30 rounds of full contact a week.
Some of the guys I fight:
A current Cruiserweight MMA champion, former pro boxer, a current kickboxing champion, a MMA competitor who will be fighting on Showtime, an amateur boxer who will be competing in the nationals this summer. etc.

My whole focus while fighting these guys in the past month has been to work the Straight Lead. By the way I work it out of both leads. To my suprise I have been tagging my opponents at will. Not only just tagging them but stopping any and all attacks that they have been trying to initiate. I've had to pull my shots because they have been so effective.
This is not to say how good I am but how effective the Straight Lead is when you break it down tear it apart and work the simplicity of the technique

I agree with jim,
I work the straight lead in sparring as well. The one thing you need is footwork, i ususally use a step and 1/4 turn as i am throwing my straight lead, i like to try to cut over the persons jab, You need good body mechanic's, (if we are mis matched) otherwise the staright lead can even just blast through thier guard. you should practice from a right and left lead. For use we do everything both leads because of the influence of thai boxing. I tend to use a more traditional lead but like to change here and there.
Practice with a partner throwing jabs while on the other hand he has a focus mitt, punch through the target, to snap and pull back

We  do the straight lead from power side forward and integrate it with the hammer principle from the teachings of Bruce lee via Bob Bremer,
It works!

Tim, just as an aside....

I was up in Canada showing the Bert Poe palm strike to the back of the head/hairline strike that you showed me awhile back...

I used you all's names when I showed the group and some of the old timers said at the next break...

"Bert Poe! I haven't heard that name is years! We saw him at a Smokey Mountain camp decades ago. All he did was show how to kill people for a few hours and then he said he 'had to go!' " He said, "I can't stay. I am ...on the run!"

No telling from what?

I thought you'd get a kick out of that...

Hock,
Thanks for the Poe story. I'm glad you're sharing what Bert taught. I still miss him. It was great seeing you again in London and meeting Joe Hubbard and your assistant Tim.
Take Care,
Your Amigo,

Hey Tim

What's up doc?  Man, it was so cool hanging out with you in London.  Thanks so much for all the secret info that you shared with me personally!  I filmed my third DVD, in my Tactical Contractor Series, the day after the seminar and Hock encouraged me to use the Bert Poe palm strike to the back of the neck as an insert to the Rear Pull Down Series; Hock being sadistic, made me do several takes- poor Tim (Llacuna) Ha!

One of the highlights of your seminar was when you were effortlessly showing us all those counters to a jab; yawning and chewing gum at the same time.  It still brings tears to my eyes.  So great to meet you!

Thanks

Joe

If you try and find info on him, Bert Poe was not his real name. He had to change it after a fight in Oregon. I never knew his real name.

Bert Poe didn't just want to gouge out an eyeball...

He wanted it to come a certain way for more follow-ups....

Tim

I loved to story you told me about Bert being asked to attack his Drill Sargent in basic training with a knife and put him in the hospital.  And the story of when he worked security at Thrifty; I bet that was a wakeup call for those dudes!

This technique is a thing of beauty and has been largely ignored by many JKD people who seek out the "latest technique",I used to be one of them until I wised up. Give it a go and see for yourself.
