Punch Defense Drills
« on: June 03, 2008, 09:22:08 AM »

Hey all,

I'm new to Hock's stuff, coming to the UC camp.  I train some Israeli (not Krav America) stuff and try to keep it real.  In that vein, we are looking for new drills to realistically address punches.  Sorry if this is a repeat topic.  Any thoughts will help.  We want to address the following, in terms of drills to practice (not the basic how-to's of parey, move outside, etc.).  We do NOT want to get into a boxing match!!!

Here's what I'm looking for:

1)  Does Hock have a DVD showing ways to drill this stuff (at least intermdiate level).

2)  Drills to address the shove/haymaker situation.

3)  Drills to address the guy who comes in with a flurry of straight shots.  We drilled this last night with headgear etc., and I eventually closed the gap and dropped him.  however, I took waaaaay too many shots from my buddy who outweighs me by 50lbs. Ouch.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts,

check Hock's  UC module 5
also Marc Halleck's panantukan silat DVDs cover many defenses against punches
either one of these is a winner!

Make sure that you are addressing this from a "Before, During & After" standpoint.  What I teach my guys is that when you are in a confrontation, fear of getting hit can throw a spoke into your wheel and with some people, shut them down.  This is where the third "F"- freeze- comes into the Fear/Anger matrix.  If you realize when your opponent can hit you (before, during and after), then you also answer when you can hit him (before, during and after).  This can be practiced from preemptive strike model or a dueling model- empty hand, stick and knife.  This kind of practice allows you to develop skill and take it away from just becoming a bunch of assholes and elbows.

Thanks for the input, some good stuff.  I'll pick up UC 5 for some ideas.

Anyone else want to comment on how they realisitically drill punch defenses in classes?  The looping hook and multiple straights?

The more the merrier.

Thanks,
