Stun, Stagger & Stop?
« on: September 30, 2004, 02:39:41 AM »

Has anybody seen The Stun, Stagger & Stop DVD by the Cold Steel guys?  The promo on it looks good, but I read a dodgy review about their knife video, so I was wondering.  If anybody out there has any comments, please let us know!

Best

Ya know the scariest thing is that Stun Stagger and Stop reminds me
disturbingly of Shake Rattle n Roll...

...seriously though ; it IS dodgy and the thing that always seems to be the
constant with Thompson's training is a dueling mindset.Too much SCA to
be construed as reality.Say I think Hock once said that Cold Steel always
seems to give him the cold shoulder.

Anyhoo, Lynn's way of fighting is a lot like Keatings' imo:Like one opponent just
slapped the other with a gauntlet.

P.S If you were wondering if I saw SS and S; no but my freind has it and says
it's the same old same old with Cold Steel.

Hey guys!  I have read many of Thompson's articles on knife combatives.  You are right, he does adopt a mindset of dueling, he often in the articles goes back to the fact that he has done,"hundreds of hours of knife sparring".  He also is a big advocate of remaining in long range, this is not always an option.  I like his products,  I like the guy that he has done knife work with (Felix Valencia), but I am afraid the vids would be a bit off the mark.

Are Felix's vids worth buying?

Once more Joe, Felix Valancia's knife-fighting is another one that belongs
in a park in New Orlean's in the 1800s.Its more dueling. All these folks,
Felix,Thompson,Keating, even DAN..teach people how to basically fence.

It's not bad, (I mean he**, they all have AWESOME footwork) it is
just not very realistic. No not too many knife-to-knife fights happen
(not preaching-you guys know this anyway). Don't get me wrong I mean
I like Kali, I plan on hooking up with Mike (no kisses) but I owuld not
rely on just THAT for real self-defense........oh sh**..........I AM PREACHING...

I have not seen any of Felix's videos Joe, so I don't have any frame of reference for those.  All I know of him is from Lameco Eskrima, he trained with the late Edgar Sulite.  If you are interested in Lameco, then Edgar's vids are out there.  Good stuff.  It is more like regular eskrima though, great emphasis on stick work, I trained in Lameco, and end up comming back to it quite a bit.  I just use Hock's approach, and much of Hock's material blends easily with it.

Ron Balicki does alot of training at cold steel. Ron's knife video's are some of the best i have seen, He has extensive training in Lameco and was the senior instructor for Edgar sulite, Ron is a bad ass with the knife, check them out
Ron is also Guro Dan Inosanto's son-in-law, so you know he gets top training
