This email came in from a trained psychology worker also involved with police work, who recently attended a Killology Grossman seminar speech - Hock

"Don't worry about anonymity - I man up to my opinion when I put it out there.  I'm not saying everything Grossman said was off-kilter, some made good sense, e.g., (but simple and things everyone knows)
   - cops should carry off duty;
   - cops should seek more realistic training as in airsoft, paintball, etc;
   - cops should take pride in being guardians, etc).

I do give Dave an "A" for inspiring and motivating; however, for scholarship and actual useful training I give him a "D".  So pick from the below:

Top 12 Incredulous Statements Made by Grossman During a Training Seminar

12.  Claims to have been at most major major mass murder scenes (e.g., Columbine, West Nickel Mines School [Amish], Virginia Tech), but did not specify role or actual access to scene or anyone involved.

11.  Used a "shock and awe" approach; constantly making claims that terrorist and other assorted bad guys are coming to "kill and rape our kids".  Stated that the first thing terrorist do in any nation is "come for your kids" (although most terrorist attacks target general population, embassies, and military targets).  Apparently the number one reason that they are coming to kill and rape the kids is Internet child porn.

10. Stressed schools are most likely the next round of targets; that in the case of the mass murder at the Amish school
 -the school was to blame;
 -that Amish were targeted by Charles Roberts because they were taught not to fight
  back (as opposed to being near him and a target of opportunity
 - had past dispute with them?).
 -Amish are more likely to be targets of violence (but they aren't).

9. Strongly alludes that ALL persons in jail/prison are violent criminals.

8. Did offer some practical advice on preparing for the "inevitable" terrorist attack or next mass murder in a school, but than recommends that any nearby armed citizen should be recruited to help in the police operation.

7. "The shotgun is quickly being phased out as a police weapon" (don't know if that is true or not); because you can carry more rifle shells than shotgun shells (he acts as if stand-offs/shoot outs of long duration without timely resupply are common place in police work like they might be in a military combat operation).

6. There will never be a GI who works everyday with a weapon [only police officers do] (made no distinction between wartime/peacetime, special ops, military police).

5. "Every year a new all time record dead in school killings"
   (but actually),
 - school associated violent deaths account for only 1% of violent deaths in youths;
 - from 2000-2008 the number of school violent deaths has fluctuated
    between 17 to 39 a year with an average of 28).

4. Violence is the leading cause of death "most likely to kill you and your kids"
  (but actually)
- unintentional injury is leading cause of death from ages 1-44
- then illnesses take over;
- homicide is #4 for ages 1-14 many family related;
- homicide is #2 only for ages 15-24 - many explanations for this, adolescence is
  traditionally violent time - especially for males;
- suicide becomes #2 for ages 25-34 and homicide #3;
- homicide drops to #6 for 35-44 and then off the top 10 list as illness takes over
   causes of death: this all CDC data).

3. Seems to over-claim his "training" accomplishments and influence; not always clear on what the training is on, but at times states tactical breathing (nothing more than the thousands year old diaphramatic breathing) and some form of critical incident stress debriefing (recently deemed as possibly hazardous to some individuals): "I train CIA, FBI, and Special Ops"; "I trained the British SAS"; "I trained the Special Ops who first went to Afghanistan"; "My model (the Grossman Model containing age old tactics such as  deter, detect, delay, defeat) is used nationwide"; "I trained Taser International"; "I train all Navy EOD (in breathing technique)"; "I trained the Veteran Administration's rehab counselors (in breathing techniques?)".

2. Repeats idea that people under duress frequently urinate or defecate themselves and it happened a lot in World Wars, but states the reason it doesn't happen very much anymore is because folks have been told it's normal (as if normalizing something stops an involuntary response? Not that there is evidence that urinating and defecating is an common involuntary response in humans in the first place).

1. "Every service member captured was gang raped" - claims the media self censored and covered it up.

I can't even get into his misrepresentation of human nature and violence, social psychology, evolutionary psychology, or youth violence and media violence.  It makes my head hurt.  He did say he teamed up with Bruce Siddle to promote more realistic, force on force training.  It's sad that someone with access to so many is not presenting good or helpful information.

Grossman lost me with his shoddy research about the infamous 27,574 civil war muskets. Seems he's the only one claiming the soldiers were suffering from a case of pacifism.

Battle tactics of the Civil War
By Paddy Griffith Read pages 85-88.

World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, Ill., 1893
By Committee on Awards, United States World's Columbian Commission. Committee on Awards, World's Columbian
This one shows that they were aware of the problem back then in 1893.

Also about the "low" casualty rates
The book is The "Ulster Guard" (20th N. Y. State Militia) and the War of the Rebellion
By Theodore Burr Gates (commander of the Ulster Guard) first printed in 1879 and the information starts on page 296 to page 301. A BIG book with some interesting things about shooting in battle.

For all his gun talk Grossman seems to have a historically tin ear on the subject.
