LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) -- An armed man was fatally shot by police following a foot chase and standoff that ended outside a fraternity house near the New Mexico State University campus, authorities said.
Students were leaving campus for lunch around 12:30 p.m. when police stopped a car containing three people they believe were involved in an attempted bank robbery in Santa Teresa earlier Monday.
Police detained a man and a woman, but a second man in the car pointed a gun at a police officer and ran into a residential area north of the campus.
Police cordoned off several blocks during the search. Some streets remained closed late Monday as police continued their investigation.
''We're still trying to piece together what happened,'' Las Cruces police Lt. Randy Lara said.
It took dozens of officers - even some animal control officers - to secure the area and ensure the man didn't escape and students didn't wander into harms way. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter hovered overhead and snipers scanned the area from rooftops as SWAT teams and police dogs went door-to-door in search of the man.
State police spokesman Lt. Jimmy Glascock confirmed that a Las Cruces police officer and a state police officer fired shots at the man who pointed a weapon at them. The man was killed.
Authorities did not immediately release the names of the officers involved in the shooting or the man who was killed.
The incident began at about 10 a.m. when the man entered the State National Bank in Santa Teresa, looked around and walked out. Police said bank employees locked the doors and called police when the man returned with two companions.
The three left the bank and were later spotted in Sunland Park. A police officer followed them to Las Cruces, where they were pulled over by authorities.
