Another cop uses knife....
« on: April 02, 2009, 07:36:46 AM »

PITTSBURGH, PA – A police officer who stabbed a suspected shoplifter at Burlington Coat Factory this weekend and four other officers who came in contact with the bleeding man will undergo medical tests after police learned the suspect has hepatitis and is HIV positive, the police union told KDKA-TV yesterday.

Police have said that Anthony Smith, 59, of Knoxville, caused cuts and abrasions to the officer’s face when he began punching him with a pair of his own handcuffs. The officer, identified in a police criminal complaint as William Kunz, stabbed Mr. Smith in the abdomen with a knife he pulled from his boot after Mr. Smith tried to grab the officer’s gun, leaving both men bloody.

Chuck Hanlon, vice president of the Pittsburgh Fraternal Order of Police, told the television station that the officers who came in contact with Mr. Smith with receive a year’s worth of anti-viral medicine and will go through “extensive HIV testing.” They will also be tested for hepatitis.

Mr. Hanlon said Officer Kunz will be off-duty for at least six weeks. He was recuperating at home from his cuts as well as a broken finger, police said.

Best wishes to the officer and his family during his recovery.
