If DC and England had it their way, we'd all live in padded-walled houses, with no pointy or rigid objects, forced to feed with disposable plastic sporks in hand.

[/quote]

That’s true of the political class and the bleeding hearts here in the U.K. It’s the same people who ban kids from running in play grounds, ban teachers from putting a plaster on a child in case of an allergic reaction and ban BB guns because some one used one in a mugging………………….

BUT, don’t think the average English guy in the street thinks this way. The vast majority of people here roll their eyes when they hear this shit. We seem to have this international reputation for being sheeple who look forward to the next draconian law. Nothing could be further from the truth. The majority of the country is sick to the back teeth with the idiots in charge.

I'll drink to that partner!  I feel for you folks over the pond, give my respect, and know someday things will balance out one way or another.  Yeah, the US has sheeple, but contrary to popular belief (media) they are in the minority.  I suspect that is the same way wherever you go in the free world.  Same old faces pushing same old agendas.  The world has changed so much the last 50 years, and draconian law is such an ancient ruling party strategy, it doesn't fit the modern times and will eventually fade into history.  You'll see it in your lifetime in your country no doubt.

Here in the US, I suspect we may fall deeper into it for a short time, then it will be freight-trained and tossed out by the majority because of the evolving global communication freedoms.  If people know what they are missing, then they tend to push for it.  Knowledge brings change thru voting, then boycotting, then social revolutions, then violent revolutions.  Gvts can't imprison or kill everyone who opposes them.  All gvts exist only because of popularity, whether voluntarily or by intimidation.  And those who exist by voluntary popularity tend to last more than a couple decades.

So hang in there and keep pressing for freedoms you deserve.  We will do the same over here!

If they were the minority we wouldn't have the types of politicians and laws we have now.

If the media wanted to incorrectly portray the average American as a sheeple and it was not true, election results would still reflect this and politicians on local, state, and federal levels would not be re-elected after attempting to pass such laws.

Don’t know about America but here in Britain we have a large silent majority who don’t vote for what ever reason. I could be wrong but I get the impression that these ‘sheeple’ are more politically active so the results of elections look like the public support this crap.

If we ever had a 100% turn out and there was an alternative party who opposed all this political correctness, my guess is both our governments would get a big shock.

Ah, fear mongering at it's best.  Damn the evil darkness where the pointy knives live.

We seem to have this international reputation for being sheeple who look forward to the next draconian law.

Though I agree with most of what you say we only have this particular reputation with some Americans.  No other nation shares this view.  And those Americans are almost exclusively Republicans, and not even all of them.  Since the last election shows that they only form the minority of the US in any case I wouldn't worry about it.  Any one with any sense realises that the population of a site like this is in no way representative of the USA.

My guestimate is that less than 10% of Americans view us in this way, with less than 0.1% of people in other countries.

Now if we are to talk of a nation's reputaion in the eyes of others it does seem that the USA draws far more adverse comment from others than the UK.  I am not saying that they deserve it, but there was a thread on here some time ago discussing that very subject and, as I remember, there was broad agreement that the US was badly thought of across the world.

Pretty soon someone will figure out that they can GRIND a point.  Then the UK will outlaw grinders.  They need to worry more about the rapid spread of Radical Islam before they worry about making stupid knives.

If someone wants to kill another human being, I'm sure that improvisation will play a part even if there are no readily available knives.  Shovels anyone?

Eugene Volokh, August 27, 2009 at 5:44pm] Trackbacks
"Glass Control: From the BBC News:

"Plans to replace the traditional pint glass with one made of shatter-proof plastic will not be accepted by drinkers, the pub industry has warned.

"The Home Office has commissioned a new design, in an attempt to stop glasses being used as weapons.

"Official figures show 5,500 people are attacked with glasses and bottles every year in England and Wales....

"An accompanying statistic reports that "[a]pproximately 126 million pints of beer are served a week in the UK"; if the 5500 attacks were all using pint glasses or pint bottles, that would be about one attack per million pints served. Thanks to Kurt Kastorf for the pointer."

"that would be about one attack per million pints served."

Actually, them's pretty good odds. The UK should be proud.
Three cheers and beers for the Brits!
