Signs of a Stroke
« on: July 05, 2009, 07:19:35 PM »

RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three
simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today.)

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

And a new Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue
Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to stick out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke

Also VERY IMPORTANT:

Is TIME, what time did the symptoms START. And when was the patient last seen acting normal.

EMS has a 3 hour window in which to get these CVA/Stroke victims to a stroke center (ER that has special resources for strokes.)

Anyone that goes to bed feeling funny, fatigue, weak, confused...even for a small nap is running down the clock so that the ER can deliver treatment in the 3 hours.

81mg chewable Baby Aspirin (ASA) a day.

Yes If having a heat attack/chest pain take 324mg ASA - Chew it up. That is 4x 81mg.

ASA works on a different part of the blood & will not effect coumadin.

Pain for EMS is defined as tightness, pressure, discomfort in the chest area. Really anything that is abnormal. Do not just ask someone if they have Chest pain, some will say no even though they have pressure or discomfort. Make sure you ask those ?s too.

Pain travailing down the Left arm or into the jaw is also of concern.

Last year I made a trip to the ER as I had a few of the signs of a stroke. I was fortunate enough to spend the night in the neuro wing of a great hospital, under-go a battery of testing and experience some excellent care. It was very sobering being the only ambulatory patient in the wing and seeing what ignoring the signs could do.

FWIW, it turned out I was suffering from a pinched nerve in my neck and dehydration, the results of working out like an idiot. What got me admitted was when the neuro Doc noticed one of my pupils was bigger than the other, a usual sign of a brain injury. Turns out that I just naturally have one pupil larger than the other, though my wife just thinks I've always been brain damaged.
