Wow! I needed that! :o

Due to circumstances beyond my control, my work out frequency has had to change (I've lost two of my training days). I still have control over my nutritional needs and recovery periods, however, and have just become lazy in carrying them out.

Joe, thanks for the kick in the rear end I needed to get things back in gear. Great article!

I have a feeling there is great truth to that article.

With the permanent injury to my upper right arm, my chinups and push ups really suffer, but I do work on them at differening angles and the chin-ups on helpful machinery.

I was never really that strong but did a zillion chin-ups in Army basic-training (and I weighed about 165 then too!) Now? Not so good at all.

The more I think about that article, the more I like it. Those exercises are like the universal, cross-over strength exercises.

But wait, did they mention flipping tires?

Seriously I thought i would add a few  thoughts of my own on the article-

What the two authors are saying is (INMHO) to stay in shape one must have a
program and stick with it-

trying new programs for a few days/then stopping/then starting just screws you up.

Type  food one puts in  the tummy makes or breaks you.

The statements about sleep are very important- no sleep no strength.

Another thing that was not mentioned and is just as important as the physical workouts is the mental condition one has on a daily basis-if you are always worried about
the "Job"- the" workout"- the weight loss that is not happening-etc etc-it will tear u down.
you need a mental framework that holds you up during times of stress-this will give you strength to "press on vigurously"

Remember its not the size of the dog its his bite that works.

I have found another thing that helps stay strong mentally and physically- that is
"to step back" and look before leaping- hope that makes sense

stay safe- WW (ELB)=="speed of light"

It's a good concept to apply to teaching CQC as well.  How many guys have you taught ask you about advanced techniques when then can't even strike with some decent power.  The basics are the foundation of everything!  It doesn't matter what you apply it to- the real "secrets" if there are any always lie in the basic skills you acquire and learn to absorb.  Bruce lee used to quote the five ways:

 1) Learn
 2) Practice
 3) Master
 4) Functionalise
 5) Maintain

I have modified this list slightly.  The legendary classical cellist Pablo Casals once said, "No matter how long a man lives, he will never be able to truly master anything."  That quote has always stayed with me, so my learning list goes like this:

 1)Learn
 2)Practice
 3)Absorb
 4)Functionalise
 5)Maintain

I didn't get the impression these guys were putting down the tire flippers, but instead reinforcing pure fundamentals as a priority.  That's what the "Don't even ask, until you can do_____" (apply to anything in life) comes into play.  A similarity in stick fighting for instance is somebody requesting that he wants to learn all of the double stick Chain-6 material, but can't even swing a single stick and cause any damage yet.

Hey! Whatever it takes! ;D

The article helped to make me realize that, although I've tried to intensify my current training program to make up for the loss of available training time, I had slacked on two key elements that the article addressed: nutrition and rest. I'm traveling a lot these days, with my family in Florida and myself still here in Meridian, and I've just gotten lazy and inconsistent in these two key areas. Although it hasn't seemed to affect my strength (I've actually gotten stronger!), it has affected my overall performance (fatigue, mental acuity, technical performance) to the point where it's very noticeable to me, even if it's not been noticed by my students or training partners yet. Anyway, Big Dawg got back on the program yesterday and is ready for the next big challenge the article addressed: consistency. Only time will tell the tale on that one! ;)

I would probably be classified as a "tire flipper" by most folks, and I love it! That's one of the workouts I've had to give up, but next week will be the first full week I've had to train in eight weeks and I plan on being a tire flippin' fool this coming Monday!

Jimbo will doing a seminar here in Meridian at the end of October, so I have just enough time to get in the kind of shape I want to be in so I can get the most out of that training. Kind of hard to learn anything when all you can think about is your next breath!

Yes; the Big Dawg is pumped-up, psyched-up and motivated! Oorah!
Thanks guys!
