making padded sticks
« on: October 27, 2009, 08:31:54 AM »

Hi folks

Ok, stick sparring with regular sticks isn't exactly taking off among the majority of my students.

So, I've got find some padded ones.

My first thought is to make some - but I have no clue what materials to use.

Has anyone here made their own soft sticks?  What did you use and how did you do it?

Hello juszczez,

I'm sure you'll get a wide range of responses. For full contact, full power practice, I've tried to make my own with little success. Either they were to flexible, not flexible enough or they had no durability.

The price and availability of chanbara make them a very appealing product. I've had some that have lasted more than a dozen years, with no visible wear and tear. Some will complain that they don't give enough feedback (because they don't cause enough pain) or are too bulky. That's a decision only you can make.

I would not purchase them from the link below, you can obtain them for less if you search around. Even on eBay.

Go to your hardware store and buy some PVC pipe.   Cut the pipe to size and wrap with pipe insulation.  Glue the insulation to the pipe using a strong adhesive.  I have used bicycle handles and plastic rounded tips for the ends.  They won't last forever, but none of them do.

A couple schools I trained at made their own.  One type I did not train with enough to learn how long they lasted.  With this type all they did was take a rattan baston or maybe a wooden dowel and cover everything but the handle with pipe isulation and then cover it with duck tape.

The other school tool PVC pipe and covered the entire thing with pipe insulation and duck tape.  These lasted a long time but the big problem was that the grip was way too thick.

Another school used commerical padded sticks that were thinner than what I usually see, about as thick as an actual baston. These would not cause injuries if the person is wearing headgear, but they really sting.

Quick and easy.  Buy a couple of Noodles (the kind you can pick up at Kmart/Walmart) that kids use in swimming pools.  Find either the PCV or stick of your choice and shove it in the hole.  You can even get different colors  :o

Use a flexible electrical conduit (like pvc but more flexible), cover with pipe insulation and wrap with duct tape.

I made a couple out of one of my brothers old lacrosse sticks.
We hacksawed the shaft in half wrapped them up with pipe foam, leaving some of the shaft sticking out for a handle. Used duck tape all over the thing, and used athletic tape to provide a better grip. So far they've worked great, and they were made in 15 minutes.

There's only one problem with them and thats that they sting pretty good, especially with harder shots.

Do what Brian and Spiff do, just pad their heads. Serves the purpose and makes a most excellent hat!
Thank me

no on pvc.

No on hardwood.

Both splinter into scary ends.

Rattan, hockey tape and pipe insulation.

Talk about kickin' it ol' school.

Aluminum dowel from yard umbrella, Kmart pool toy and heavy 100mph tape.  Using aluminum poles for dowel works best, light to reduce impact pain and no breaky.

Or wear hockey gloves and a rubber bucket with rattans.

flea market score, Golf clubs shafts make good training sticks,. Keep the putter to ride in the back seat, for 'T time'!  Bag becomes a rifle carry bag to hit the range!

I used to have the kiddies use the wand from window blinds.  Flexible, just about impossible to break and sting like a biatch!

As you progress, have the neighborhood kids steal all the car antenna's from a couple streets over.   :P :D

For cheap head protection, hit up the post halloween sales and get the 70's Afro man wigs and fake teeth.

Arnold, you dont need the teeth, just take out your dentures...   ;)  LOL

It was a pleasure.
