Officers shoot suspected robber

A suspected armed robber has been shot and seriously injured by police firearms officers in Lancashire.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were in Haslingden on Friday night in an operation connected to a series of armed robberies.

They fired an unspecified number of shots after making contact with three suspects on Blackburn Road.

One man was shot and taken to hospital. All three were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) was immediately informed and is handling the investigation.

The incident took place at 2200 BST on Friday during what was described as a "pre-planned operation" by GMP's Serious and Organised Crime group.

Immediate deployment

It has not been disclosed whether the men were armed, or if any shots were fired at police.

But at least two firearms were discharged during the incident, which happened near a Co-op supermarket.

The injured man was taken to hospital where his condition is described as serious but stable.

The 29-year-old has also been placed under arrest, along with two other men aged 20 and 25.

"The incident was referred to the IPCC and investigators were deployed immediately to the scene," said an IPCC spokesman.

"Further information will be issued when available."

Investigations are continuing and IPCC investigators remain at the scene.

Wow armed robbery. Things are differant in the UK. All you need here in the U.S. is a nice posted note and a crappy looking ball cap. Then you get all the money you wont and walk out of the bank . When you get home you can watch your self on TV. While the cops all scratch there heads.
I remember in the 70s - late 80s every bank had security officers or off duty officers that worked the banks. Now they don't have shit. Robbing a bank is as easy as running over an ATM machine. There is no resistance anymore. I remember when the banks could actually go into a lock down mode.
I heard a Dallas FBI agent a couple of years ago saying that they were going to make up a task force to see why there has been a sudden rise in bank robberies.  NEWS FLASH DIP SHIT, maybe because its so damn easy. One guy walked into a bank dressed up like a shrub with tree branches on his head. He got money and left. Would it not be a clue that if a tree walks into your bank that you might wont to call the cops or pull out a bat and beet the hell out of it before the tree gets all the way into the bank.
I have no sympathy for the banks.  Id arm the tellers or hay here's an idea. Pay for security. 40-80 thousand a year as compaired to loosing a couple million. Its like the banks don't care. My bank has been robbed twice in the last year. Its almost a daily event here in Texas.

                                                               Redfive

The old Texas banks would hire a gun fighter to sit in a specially built balcony of the bank. He would kill anyone who tried to rob the bank, or blast anyone who walked in wearing a mask.

Interesting-when i was in poland in a small small town i went to the bank to change some dollars into polish money- while waiting in line i observed a armed security officer standing up above the patrons plus at least 3 cameras placed around the room-this security officer was alert , carried a radio and did not look like a rent a cop

jumping back to the US in Clarksville Tn i know of one bank that has been robbed at least 3 times in the past 2 years-- no armed security in sight-

what can i say..

Not sure.  Maybe Wall Mart?

No, they're not for sale over the counter.  That's why people are rarely killed by guns over here I suppose.....

The robbers got guns!!! This is a perpetuating example of failed gun control in the UK. It does not work at all. Can you explain that, Brian S? :P

First, Im all in favour of gun control, no crminial should be allowed them! all others, fill your boots.

Second, there have always been guns in the UK and there always will be. Just like in Canada and the US. Lots of guns get smuggled into the country, just like in Canada and the US. We have legislated against crime and it's still here. You can legislate against fireams all you want but the genie is out of the bottle and its time to face reality

Here we go again.

There is some gun crime in the UK, therefore gun control does not work... therefore gun ownership in the USA does......... (pssssst.... there is gun crime in the USA too.... so what does this prove?)

I'm not coming in on this argument at such a low level.  It's a bit like someone saying "My Dad can fight your Dad" during a national debate with a world leader.

My point is, the UK has always had guns, its not like they were "just" introduced.

Of course the UK had guns and gun ownership was a normal thing there before the disarmament just for the sake of a safer country. And since then, murder went up, home invasions went up just as much as assaults.

Many Americans believe that the stricter gun controls introduced after the Hungerford village massacre, and the Dunblane school massacre somehow disarmed the UK populace.

It didn't.  They weren't armed, but a tiny minority did attend gun clubs, and even these people were not allowed to carry firearms in public places.  It is largely the regulation of these clubs that was affected, and I agree that the legislaion was draconian as well as a silly knee jerk reaction.

However, our schools and colleges have been safe since.  No matter what your views are on the gun issue, it is hard to say the same thing about schools and colleges in the USA.
