level 6 elbow/back kick drill
« on: November 28, 2009, 09:12:04 PM »

Came up with this about a week ago...
>Student turns his back to you
>Approach the student from behind with a kick shield and give him a good shove/bump either slightly to his left or slightly to his right, "stick" to the student with the shield to simulate someone initiating some sort of hold from the rear.
>Student responds with a rearward elbow, based on what side he feels the contact on.
>If the elbow strike creates enough distance the student will follow up with a back kick
>If the elbow does not set up the back kick you can contiune to bump him until he sets/roots and delivers an elbow strike of sufficient force to set up the back kick.

Morning- sounds good-gets the novice prepared for surprises-also try 2 attackers at the same time comming up from behind-see what happens -lots of ways to improvise this type drill-

What are you, some sort of kung fu genius or something?  Still ain't no ninja!

Good drill, we'll do it this week.  We like to make it an accordian drill, with an attacker in the front and back.  A bit more chaotic, but the attackers come in at a brisk, even pace.  Push kicks, rear kicks, punches, elbows, whatever is needed to keep them away.  They always have to watch for the other guy to come back, so good awareness along with the combatives.  Probably not original at all, but sorta fun.

For a cardio slam, we get tombstone pads, one to a pair.  First guy does 10 punches and then a squat thrust/sprawl, repeating that sequence two more times.  Then toss pad to partner, he does same thing.  That's ONE.  This whole sequence is repeated 3 times.  Now move on to upward front kicks, 10 with alternating legs x 3 x3 for both partners.  Now add elbows.  It kicks everyone's ass.  THEN surprise tackle a student and make them get out while exhausted and heart pumping. ;D

We'll periodically do that during class, randomly.  Take a student down, or start smacking them with a pad when they're not expecting it.  The goal is to have them be aware, and also start countering immediately upon being attcked.  Train the reflex with some combative control.

Wizard- that sounds good also-anything that surprises the defender using more than one attacker makes them continue the defense till over welmed-then someone else jukmps in and tkakes a turn-WW
