Hock--the use of the clock in discribinhg the tactics is excellent-great for as you say practising alone the various defenses/offenses-unarmed or armed with a knife-
i found  some vidios from the crucible and when watching them and thinking of the clock it fits in perfectly-WW

Lots of systems are half-baked.

In an attempt to utilize an angle of attack system that they conconct, they wind up ignoring or under-playing vital angles and other directional issues. Or they don't have any doctrine on angles. For very simple targeting you don't need a clock, (a stomach is a stomach) BUT when you start defending yourself, zones are easier to teach, and the 4 corners of the clock is an unforgettable teaching tool for this.

Or systems include everything in an almost endless stream of disjointed moves that remind me of bad katas. I once knew a martial arts "name" who created a knife attack set that followed no common sense pattern, no progression, just a wild collection of stabs and slashes in thrusts and hooks that no one could memorize (not even him).

Most systems are half-baked in their doctrine and that is simply why I don't do them.
Most of these so-called "reality combat" systems have no little-to-no-doctrine, just a bunch of fighting techniques (that often resemble basic, old school karate)

If you lay the combat clock on the ground you have a fantastic footwork and longer range maneuvering system of doctrine. Every system has a footwork pattern that is circular and many of these turn in upon themselves, but the clock can let you "power walk" or burst out of the clock-space an imperative for police and military and well, citizens also.

The clock format is unforgetable and easy to learn for everyone.

Anyway, a maximized fighting system is about doctrine, doctrine, doctrine. Know the mission, work toward that mission without distractions.

Hock, I'm looking forward to reading your book but it will be after Christmas before I get a copy. There are many uses of the clock format throughout training and use of force, "Got Your Six" and "Twelve O'clock" and so on. Most of what I see people teaching is paint by numbers kinds of things which can give people with no background or skills a quick one two three type system to work off. Not having access to your book yet I take it you are transferring "Paint by Numbers" to the torso by hanging a virtual Flavor Flave Rapstar type clock necklace around the neck of a Silhouette and working off that. Then throwing out the "Twister" floor plan to use a big flat clock laid on the ground to work the feet.

Steel is something I think about constantly. Having looked at some systems and been on the inside of the game for a few years, its almost impossible to teach realistic practical training as its just not fun compared to Dueling and messing about making up jungle stories. Some have gotten me wrong in the fact I'm a FMA Critic but I have a great respect for actual Filipinos who lived in and trained in the Philippines. Its just much of the FMA crowd in America have never spent much time there and have certainly never had to fight for their lives, they just sell stories to a crowd who is looking for stories. It makes life hard for people like you who I think are providing a valuable product when it comes to knives but since you dont try to blow smoke up everybody's ass practicality is a hard sell.

Have you considered making a Note Book with some basics as a companion to the book? Something you could throw in the Gym bag and drag off to the training grounds. Even a series of notebooks would be cool, I have way to much respect for books to have them out in the yard while I'm swinging a machete around. Something like a ten back for instructors would be nice as most students, heck most instructors wont dish out over fifty bucks for a book and if you dont sell notebooks guys will end up making their own handouts with a copy machine.

You know....on notebooks...

This year I am leaning hard to make some notebooks but on the collective subject of hand, stick, knife, gun utterly blended together to the max.

There is a lot of material there. Looking at everything from a hand, stick, knife, gun, while standing and grounded perspective... can the move be done? Why. Why not?

And I'd like to make some notebooks on it. In fact I am working on one now on Footwork and Maneuvering with all these subjects.  It even covers crawling, kneeling, walking and running while carrying pistols and long guns, along with the typical boxing ring footwork.

I'd like make them really cheap and avaiable on PDF (which I know invites a sea of pass-arounds) but they would be rough outline books with how-to photos.

If I didn't need money to stay alive, I would just do hand, stick, knife gun together. That is what interests me. But people (customers) only want the solo subjects, or maybe two of the subjects. So I had to split them up. My idea of the Training Mission Books and DVDs was pretty much a business mistake. People have wanted the seperate programs by a majority.

But yes, I am trying to do some outlines. One subject, which I have been teaching in late winter seminars is ...you might say... "block and strike." BUt with all weapons. With the pistol its "block and shoot," or block and threaten" with simulated ammo guns. Anyway. Most everyone functions well with empty hands, but when you stick a knife or gun in their hands and do this work, (as physical tests have shown with tennis players) some things change. BUt its a universal, close quarters problem and a great seemless time to introduce the subject as a teaching tool.

Anyway, that is what I am thinking about and working on these days. This year!

WW, I wanted the old book but never got a copy of it. I cant wait to get the new book but I had to buy a new computer recently and other new junk for my office so it has to wait till after Santa comes unless yo want to loan me fifty bucks and some stamps,  Grin

Hock, The notebook thing sounds like a good plan. I like the PDF idea too, the marketing issues are something we will all be dealing with as things change. Who knows the bad economy may even be a bonus for all things Combatives and Defense?

I have been reviewing the book- as usual-each time i look at it i find something more in it

Today I read page 225 again and have to say it is one of the best thoughts about sports ground fighters i have heard-

as i share a school with a teacher of army combatives i see the army come in and practise-no one even brings a practise knife-let alone practise defense or offense with it

will it ever change- i dont think so-stay  safe out there WW

Hock,
Very nice book.
An encyclopedia of Knife Fighting.
(just short of 300 pages)
A must have for those interested in having a wrtitten copy of Good Knife Materials at hand rather than just having DVD's.

As WW said the book can be taken to the gym as is.
(I would not want to risk it being stolen)
The spiral binding allows one to take the book and copy the sections or  pages of interest to train ,and place those select pages into a thin loose leave book and take that to the gym to train.
(if that goes missing you still have the full Original)

Thanks Hock
All the Best
Much Success

Here ya' go!

What a deal on "Hock Hochheim Krav Maga" knife book on Ebay! $99! Twice the price.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Knife-Counter-Knife-Combatives-Hock-Hochheim-Krav-Maga_W0QQitemZ220525850646QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item33585d7016

"Hochheim Krav Maga!" What kind of disjointed, disconnected idiot came up with that?

Hock

(WAIT I feel better! This idiot is also selling a matchbox Minnie Mouse car!

Interesting. Their eBay seller name is "phila-lawyer", but they mail out of Houston? In addition to a bunch of MA/SD videos and curios, they're also selling one of your "Eagle Coin" sweatshirts. What are they doing, raising money so their kid can go to college? Surely somebody on the board knows who this is. And don't call me Shirley.
