kettlebells

Anyone know about these "kettlebells"? Pavel uses them I believe.

Sounds like another fit-fad.

I hear folks saying there better then weights (conventional).

Kettlebells are anything but a fad... serious strength athletes have been using them for a good hundred years at least - along with barbells and "odd object" lifts.

For "old school" strength training from the "iron age", check out: http://www.sandowplus.co.uk/
And for the best of the modern weight workouts, www.ironmind.com has some excellent material for sale.

Yes I have been using them for some time. Plan on getting RKC certified next year. I know Mike Mahler and he has done several seminars and most of our Jujutsu class has attended. One of the black belt is RKC since last year. I have a post I placed a few months ago. Need to check it out. I cured a serious shoulder injury using kettlebells. I am working with the 44lbs and a little with the 53 again. I would recommend looking for a beginner and level 1 seminar and attend. I woiuld also start with the 36lb unless you are a muscle man.

I have looked at these before, and keep coming back - but I just can't justify the cost of a cast iron ball; they're so much more expensive than dumbells (there's your exercise fad factor, I think: 'hip' equipment costs more) but I do like the simplicity of the thing.
Mike, I'd like to hear more about how you cured a shoulder injury with them.  If I could cure my old rotator cuff injury it might make the purchase price worthwhile.

Thye remind me of the "pin" looking things that the Persians used
for so many centuries. Those weights that looked like bowling
pins.

Mark Hatmaker also has a sand bag workout in his "Gladiator Conditioning Workbook."  I use a sand bag called the Power Bag.  I have found this useful for a quick work out at home.

Cheers

To Virgil,
All I did was do the basic swing and clean twice a week for about a month. I do not want to sell someone elses product here but by Pavel fisrt kettlebell tape/dvd. "The Russian Kettlebell Challenge" and if you could afford it buy a 36lb kettlebell to start. Or go to Mike Mahler at www.mikemahler.com and buy his first dvd. You will also get a written manual to go along with the DVD. I have only four kettlebells and only will buy one more 44lb and 53lb. It will take me about eight month to a year to jump up to the big kettlebells. What I like about them is I can take my gym anywhere. I am workinhg out a combination body weight kettlebell conditioning plan. I have hit a stage where my weight doesn't budge and by working with some professionals who are friends I willl hpoefully hit my goals mark of another twenty pound loss.

Mike,
thanks for the info.  I'm excited about possibly eliminating my chronic low-grade shoulder pain.  I'll probably get Pavel's book soon.  And thanks to Trembula for the USMC link; I put together a 36 pounder with sand and an empty Costco laundry container, so I guess I'm good to go.

Oh, and here's a link I found just this evening; cheapest kbells I've ever come across …

Just got my first kettlebell 3 weeks ago and I'm enjoying it. Started out with the 36 pounder. I've been doing alot of push ups, pull ups, etc so it didn't feel too heavy at first. After awhile though, it gets to you. They're convenient as hell and I don't have to do any setup. I just grab em when I get home and get busy for a half hour. They have not become my only method of training but I do them on alternate days from my running/calisthenics regimen. My grip strength has become awesome to boot. My .45 feels like a toy gun at this point.  ;D

Interesting to read my old posts. In the interim, I got an adjustable kettlebell ("kettlegrip" they call it) from Ironwoody (from ebay for $40) - it's a handle and pin that takes standard 1" hole plates - and Pavel's book.  Been sampling all the exercises, but doing snatches, mostly, and am hooked on the strength and conditioning it provides.  I would recommend the Iron Woody kettlegrips for the price, especially if you're not sure you want to invest in a more conventional KB. Having said that, I think the 'real' KBs are better, and just ordered a 24kg Powermax KB.  Come Hock's August seminar here in Abq, I'll be unstoppable!  ;)

Facts regaring the kettlebell (sport)

1- It is an old sport in Russia that preceded modern weightlifting up till 1912, before WWI.
2- Since it is lifted by one hand, the kettlebell causes random and arbitrary muscular development. Lifting with one arm for long periods and with heavy weights deform the musculoskeletal system.
3- Since the kettlebell is asymmetric around the hand grip, it causes serious trauma to the wrist, elbow, shoulder, and spines. It differs from dumbbell in that the dumbbell are symmetrical around the axis of rotation.
4- Kettlebell could be with very advanced athletes as a component of enhancing wrist flexion and extension provided that the lifter has developed advanced level in functional anatomy and injury prevention.

Nice synopsis Kliplemet.

I think the modern hand weight is a step above the kettlebell.
I think the big, strong muscular guys tossing kettlebells around would probably be big, strong muscular guys with free weights too.

I think that some exercises do help SOME back ailments, so in the that sense some kettlebell exercises (and free weight exercises) help the back. No miracles with either. Just smart diagnosis and proper treatment.

And I argree completely on the machines and their lack of prime success. I am just relagated to them now until my latest back problems stabilize. I am seeing a new specialist next week. I have little problem compared to the many who really know pain and suffering.

Functional strength is the key quest for me.
