What is sambo?
« on: March 26, 2010, 05:17:15 PM »

I started this new thread to address Hock's comments on the other thread.

Here are some videos that help explain what sambo is:

Funny one:

2009 Trip (this is when Travel Channel brough Dhani Jones over as well):
Behind the scenes of the show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgohmXANkGk
Some training: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkkYC2HB7PY

If anyone has netflix, or other options, I would suggest watching the whole episode.

NYTimes article/mini documentary on sambo:

There is a lot of info on our press page as well:

That should have quite a bit of info for now...

Sambosteve-you sure are right-lots of info here-i will go over again but the first 2 things i picked up on are:
1-in the initial movement one does continuous motion not stop after one part and then start again-in hebrew that is called retsuv-

2-I will start practising the roll you showed-makes sense being close to the opponent
not far out-

i am not proficient at all in sambo -it makes a lot of sense

Sure, conyinuous movement should not be unique to sambo.

I will often have them hold their kurtka (jacket) during rolls and falls, or put a weapon in their hand...it hurts to slap out with a fist ;)

For noobs I briefly let them slap out. For many new guys it helps orient them to the floor, etc. But, once they got it, I stress not to do it any longer. And like everything else, it is just lots of practice and mat time...

The catch 22 is that slapping out prevent posting on the elbow. So get them to stop elbow posting first, then stop slapping out.

Also, you know how traditional forward rolls for example, you have one arm that tucks and the other traditionally posts the hand on the floor. Gotta break that habbit. That is a good time to have them hold their own jacket.

WW

Have people roll on hard surfaces (softly at first)...they will learn quick how to roll properly, protect their head, arms, etc.

It is important to do softer sparring on hard surfaces to get the feel and comfort with the ground. Focusing less on exact technique, and more on fluid movement. Here is an example of training on the wood floor from my coach's club. The goals is flow, not exact technique...literally going with the flow.
