Good sticks to buy
« on: April 07, 2005, 07:12:19 AM »

So, I was training the increasing 12s today, and my partner had a white wax wood stick that I bought from a place online.  Well, about the second or third time through, the stick broke in the middle.  Darn near shattered in two.  I was only blocking with a rattan stick, I think. However, the rattan one is looking pretty beat up, and I am wondering if there is a more durable brand or material out there that I could buy.  I understand that sticks break, but this was the first time banging hard like that, and the sticks both wore out, quick fast and in a hurry.  Can anyone help me on this?

Ironwood will last. I also have a set of fiberglass/polymer sticks that seem to be taking a good beating.

Hey,
i sell high quality rattan sticks, at my school we go at it and the sticks hold up and last, as far as ironwood / kamagong i have these as well BUT they are an endangered wood, they do not export them from the filipines anymore, they are expensive $80 a pair, so i would not hit them against anything, i train with them doing all my carenza's and such, i would use them if someone came in for a challange, they are fighting sticks, really nice, hang them on the wall.
let me know if you are interested, Hock knows the quality of my sticks and can verify

Kalliman's sticks are great.  Looked upon them with great excitement this past weekend.

Waxwood doesn't have the strength or density for use in impact work. I think a lot of its popularity is due to the "place online" selling them cheap and that it is light. Seasoned hickory ain't ironwood, but it is cheap and not endangered - for as long as there have been people living in North America where it is common, it has been used for tool handles and impact weapons. There's a reason.

Of course, dense rattan is nice too, but on my budget, I'll stick with "Davy Crockett" sticks  ;)

I buy 1" round polycarbonate stock from the local plastic supply company.  I then round off the edges and put knurling on them.  Essentially, I make my own riot batons.  As far as I know they are unbreakable except in industrial equipment.  I charge my guys $25 for a 32" stick.  You might want to check out a previous threat about "unbreakable" sticks.

Regarding cost... it's hard to beat "Free" save a little time in front of the TV whittling it to shape.... $20 to $25 ea. for a good rattan stick is a very nice price.

www.sof-stx.com

Has sticks that are hickory & coated in rubber (or something). I just broke my 1st one in 6-7 years in Jan @ the LV seminar and it did not splinter or shatter. The coating kept it in one peice.

Heres something to chew on...While running a basic drill.(We both just recieved our brand new kamagong sticks.Nice wood). In the middle a sinawalli pattern,my bro's nice new stick broke !The upper third took a spinning trajectory that came damn close to yard darting his eye.
We werent going all that hard or fast. There was no indication that there was a problem...no cracking or splittting, just that chunk of wood flying away.
On closer inspection, after the fact.We found what looked like a knot inside the stick, where the break occured,it wasnt all that easy to spot by looking at the outside of the stick.
We were both alarmed and  disappointed. The kamagong wood does appear to be nice stuff but I had no idea that it could just snap. Also safety glasses migth be a good idea for those of you that dont do so already.
Has anybody out there had a similar experience with kamagong?

I never train with kamagong when hitting with a partner.  They are to expensive and that is what could happen. I have a some kamagong left.  A students family sent them to us from the PI. most are really nice, couple on close inspection you can see a knot. I only train with mine solo, and would use them to fight. You should see where you bought them if they will give you a new one

Roger on notifying the vendor. I'm in FL., He's in Ca. so it'll be a while for a response.
We werent reallly doing anything all that rough. We were just getting a feel for them,I mean it only took a couple of exchanges and it broke.
I understand why you dont use them for training with a partner. But this did teach me a lot about this type of stick.I've never seen a chunk of rattan flying away.Rattan will squish up but it wont just pop off.
If you're thinking of using the stick for defense, check for those darn knots! This didnt take much to break. It would have had minimal impact energy.
I'm surprised that they allowed a piece of wood with a knot in it to be used.Wood breaks around knots doesent it?

You didn't happen to buy those sticks from Pappy Dog did you? Just call him, I'm sure he'll replace them.

Or you could buy 6 pairs of regular mano rattan sticks for the same price.  ;D

It is nice stuff.I figure it wont be too long before it goes the way of cocobalo.
The price is going up all the time.Wont be able to get it at all after a while.
