Combat Canes?
« on: April 12, 2005, 11:58:19 PM »

This sort of cane is becoming more and more popular and lots of instructors are offering "Cane" courses/workshops of varying degrees of quality and value. Considering their utility and portability, as well as ability to go where we can't take our knives and guns, I am just curious about what all of y'all think.

I got one for christmas from a black belt friend. I am training with him using the cane & Hock's SDMS. My friend wants to get certified to teach the cane from M. Shuey of canemasters. So I thought I would help by certing with him using SDMS info in the process.

I will be bring it on the plane to Dallas this May to see if you really can get it on the planes.

I teach cane, my instructor carries his everywhere, always gets it on planes, but you have to limp in an airport, we treat the cane like a stick with a hook, you can utilize all your kali techniques and add the hook in for pulling, stricking and takedowns, it is fun, it is what i carry in the front seat of my car

Marc, I was told that Americans with Disabilities Act prevents you from being asked about your disability your it is a violation of your rights.(Pls anyone out there that knows better let me/us know more.)
But I can limp to if needed or get a note from my Chroipractor.

Also Marc, can that be a side DVD that you do on the cane? Because, some of the DVD's that Shuey does are a little..........well there not what I'm use to from Hock's info.

The techniques I use with a cane are all from Hock's SDMS or from the "Cane Warfare" series that TRS did a while back (look and you might find it used online) featuring Ralph Ellingson, Kelly Worden, and Jerry VanCook. A can is just a ~3 stick that happens to have a handle of some sort on the end. All the SMDS stuff works and with some imagineering and practice, the times when you should use the hook will become apparent when the opening presents itself.

Personally, I don't really care for Shuey's material (what I have seen of it) and the price of his canes, which are WAY too expensive... it's just a piece of wood with some notches and bevels in it...

The selling point of the cane is that it can be taken anywhere, even on planes.

Well thanks to these instructors outspoken view of use of the cane many airlines are,  and will be, taking your cane.
If unable to walk,or claim not to be able to walk, they will provide you with a wheel chair.
(First on last off)

The cane is a great weapon and can be carried on the street, but again, the sellers tell you you have the right to carry it and use it in self defense.
They also tell you  to walk with a limp so it is not apparent that it is a weapon.

Well the mugger or attacker looks for a victim that may provide less fight,if you carry the cane and limp as directed you are now enticing an attack.

If the cane is used in self defense when questioned of why you had the cane ,can you produce evidence of need?
If not it is a weapon.

Baseball is legal, but can I walk around carrying a bat?
No
If i am not going to ,coming from or at  a ball park it is a weapon.

Many cane instructors tell you of the ability to use the hook, well in a dynamic situation the hook ends up getting in the way of many strikes.
Try to use the hook end to catch ,trap and pull limbs in a dynamic situation it is almost imposiible to get to work.
(in my opinion)
The hook may work in a static attack but once you lift it and the attacker sees that you do not need it to stand I doubt he/she will remain static.

If you wanted to carry a cane ,then get a walking stick,no hook, many have nice metal ornamental designs on top.
They also sell designer metal canes that work well and inflict damage with the slightest contact.
(a bit heavy but great if needed)

Again remember that it is a weapon and will be viewed as such, unless you can show a need to have it.

Good, I'm not the first one to say it. cool, fun to learn, demonstrate and teach....yep      BUT.The cane material is worth a plug nickel........

Personally, I carry a rattan cane with a heavy wooden ball that serves as a hand hold.  Yes, my knees sometime give me trouble....

I've NEVER been asked to provide a doctor's notice, etc.  It's just a carry on item in the same way as a golf umbrella....which also works exceptionally well.   Treat it without regard.....my mother-in-law carries a fold-up-cane in her handbag all the time.

Something I learned a while back when I actually needed a cane is that if it is truly needed as a mobility aid, i.e. you can't walk or stand without it (been there, done that), then it ain't going to be much use as a weapon. In that case, the agility, balance, coordination, and speed to make any effective use after one blow, if that are lacking and if that first whack doesn't solve the situation, you'll probably fall over  ;) Where the cane shines is for those folks who can still get around and may or may not occiasionally need a little assistance. Alas we are long past the days when every dapper gentleman carried a cane and quite a few knew how to use it...
