Zulu...one of the world's perfect movies. It was exactly what it is..perfectly. (as is the Big Lebowski, perfect is as perfect does). Zulu WHAT a movie. Dare I say, "splendid!"

Lawrence...Excellent...the Bridge...excellent. But haven't seen the others.

I am oft reminded of a quote from Zulu when I travel through the centre of any large British city...

'Zulus to the southwest...thousands of 'em!'

Lawrence of Arabia! Wow! WHAT a movie. I was young when I frst saw it and it captivated me. Today, I think it is one of a few films people need to see to understand the tribal Middle East mentality.  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056172/   WHAT a movie!

That and Exodus
http://www.amazon.com/Exodus-Paul-Newman/dp/B00006FDAU/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1286213167&sr=1-1

They just don't make them like that anymore. And you know, they could, with computer graphics taking over the vast expense of real people and giant sets.

How about "A Bridge Too Far"?  Maybe I just like it because it has paratroopers in it.  Dunno where it was made or who produced it.  I personally thought it was pretty good, for it's time.

GREAT movie! A keeper.

Love the last line.
"I guess that was one bridge too far."  (something like that)
You could actually pair that up with "D-Day", then watch a "Bridge too Far."

After running up and down the Rhine river in 2002 on a Germany trip, I got a sense of history of it all and I bought all the Rhine River, WW II movies and watched them. Another one was Bridge at Remagen, which...was not as good. Geroge Segal was kind of an odd actor in those days. He played some macho parts in those days, in some films, but WAS really NOT suited for those roles.

Robert Vaughn made a good Nazi in bridge at Ramargen. A bridge to far was excellent, Gene Hackman stole every shot he was in. Robert Redford's ' Hail Mary ' river crossing scene is one to remember.

An Ungentlemanly Act, Tumbledown, Resurrected are simply the best. I don't think that they got an airing in the states. That's a great shame. Three excellent films about The Falklands War. Regeneration is the story of officers returning from the trenches of WW1. Shell-shocked and broken, but facing a disbelieving military / establishment. It's very moving, and has a fine cast. In one part experimental ' therapies ' where used to bring the guy's out of shock ( torture in the name of care ! ).
Once seen never forgeteen.

I saw Regeneration about 15 years ago. It was really interesting but disturbing. I thought why don't they make really interesting dramas in Hollywood anymore? I remember that movie better than most of the blockbusters I have seen since then.

That's the mark of a truly good film. Long-lasting in the memory. The one that got too me as a kid was ' Path's of Glory ' with Kirk Douglas as The French Officer, torn between order's and humanity.

I watched an Israeli film called ' Beaufort '. Not 100% certain that was the name. These Israeli squaddies. stuck on outpost duty. Getting mortared and bored to tears. It was funny and moving. Good movie. A bit slow, but well worth the watch.

All war film's are antiwar to some degree. The wartime propaganda films like ' Went the day well ? ' are the exception. Very tame by today's standards. But extremely shocking in the forties. That was the plan. The Ministry of Information ( they funded and produced many of the wartime classics's ) had psychiatrists and psychologist's working with the M.O.D to produce these anti-German moral booster's.

Was Zulu about the battle at Islandwana, or Rorke's Drift?  Very curious...might have to just watch it for myself.

Zulu was Rourke's drift, Micheal Cane etc,. The second film was the story of the first Battle ( confusingly ) the film was Zulu Dawn, Burt Lancaster, Peter O'Toole, Simon Ward, Bob Hoskin's etc. The Battle was Isanduwana.

The third Battle ( Ulundi ) also known as the Battle of King's Kraal was not made into a movie. It was not a battle it was a massare, the first time maxim ( machine ) guns where used in combat. The Zulu's where mown down.

The wars did not end there, but that was the last major conflict.

Not sure if it was a Brit movie or not, but Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence was a jolly good yarn

If you like movies where an engineer/scientist has a major role you might really like The Dambusters. Real Avro Lancasters are used too.  :)
