Thoughts on training with a knife
« on: November 09, 2010, 08:37:23 PM »

Wish I could take Joes knife seminar but sense i connot my question is this.
a student of mine who is a deputy sheriff in a county jail and i were training with a
rubber knife- we first did the tactic slow motion-and the take away- next we speeded it up a little and tactic still worked but---when the attacker did resist the attempt takeaway or disarm the tactic fell apart as he could continue the cut/stab-or he used other hand to strike-
so what i am asking is how do you practise when the movement is more real and faster??

We do not use masks or gloves in the drills.. Do we just do the tactic over and over to
overcome the knife attack/

I think context is eveything, nothing happens in a vacum...except maybe a vacum. Knife disarms can be tricky or simple or in between. I think the lesson that can be learned is "expect to get cut and expect resistance when you counter the attack" Start slow and build the speed. Its tough when you repeat the same exercise over and over as both parties will know whats coming and when its coming and will adapt to suit.

Canuk
makes a  lot of sense-basically thats what we were saying- what we did actually was repeat the attack but from differenrt angles so u id not know where it was comming from-including palming the knife-getting close and quick stab to side or back-if nothing else it awakens u to real sanarios (as best u can in a practise mode)-if u have more ideas i would like them- i am continually reviewing Hocks knife counter knife photos and info-i.e. knife swipe-victim pulls in stomach and as knife comes back blocks and continuus attack.

The attacker always needs to be softened up with strikes or shocks to the body, joints, brain to get their mind off resisting, when armed or unarmed.

The fight or resistance needs to be taken out to a degree.

example:
Attacker is close has right hand behind back
We automatically go with he has a knife ,no matter if they do or not.
Attacker shoots arm out and up,mid line stab.
We react with an Oh crap move ,left foot slight step in as our body turns to our right, our right foot slides in an arc to our right.
Our left inside forearm parries the knife to our right, our right arm comes over and down to catch or wrap the uprising kinife arm.
Our short step in will allow our right hand wrap to be between the knife and the elbow joint.
Right arm grabs or wraps, pulls the knifers arm in to us tight as we turn left side of body and left arm into the attackers right elbow joint causing pain, maybe the weapon to drop, maybe a break.
We keep the knife arm wrapped and strike and turn into the elbow 1-2 more times.
our right hand grabs the back of the kinfe attackers right elbow,,keeping attackers right arm tight to us as our left arm rises and strike with an forearm or edge of hand strike to attackers ,neck, throat and or face.
Our right leg can also slide behind and allow a throw ,but never let the attacker s arm to go slack.

We make sure to soften,in this case the elbow, to reduce resistance.
Always find an attack point to soften the opponent.
My opinion.

JIMh-good example-appreciate it-tonight is thursday class-will start out with hidden knife and counters to it comming-what we do is go over and over and over-what we hav been doing is same as you discribed but as we have left arm come around for initial block the right forearm is comming at same time both striking and we go basically as you discribe from there -we are really whipping the arms around using waist-we also do multiple plam strikes -never just one
as i get into knife defense more and more i reolize that it is a complicated wpn to defend against-aginst a real opponent  not pulling the stab it becomes immediately a life or death incident-i guess the best thing i can do is just keep practising -getting my reaction tiime up and become very agressive.
You know we joke around a lot on the forum and some get agrevated if something is said that does not agree with their train of thought-but-we are all basically on the same team-the good against the bad-so tactics no matter what should be looked at -tried and
if it does not seem to work -ask.........take care-keep up the useful info- WW

Today we worked on defense again=on the knife stab/swipe-little bit faster than before-
appears we would have cut each others arms a lot-as we got ahold of the knife wrist we
repeated strong strikes to face and got into wrist twists (if we could)-or repeated knees
to body area-practised going to ground with opponent and continuing beating him.
What i am advacating is Hocks statement- its not over till its over-so we just keep on going against opponent-we noticed that endurance plays a role in this as we ramp it up one gets tired-
