Who "invented" the Groin Kick?
« on: February 13, 2011, 08:10:31 AM »

I don't believe there are any recorded incidences of kicks to the nuts until Funakoshi intruduced the technique in the early 1900's.  Until that time people knew the nuts were vulnerable but could not develop a workable long range  technique, ( there was always the grab and twist technique developed - I believe-  by the Shaolin Monks in the 13th century) to access them. It took centuries! And now- every system known to man claims it.

There are depictions of Greeks using kicks to the Groin area in and around 500 BC.
There are depictions of Romans using knee strikes to the groin in and around 25 AD.

I am sure The Cave Man and or Neanderthal knew about kicks to the groin, lol.

What systems claim to own this kick?
Do you mean Funakoshi folks claim they own it?

Yep, Talhoffer, Ringeck and Fiore all described kicks and knee-strikes to the groin back in the 15th century.  Considering that covers Germany and Italy from that period, I think it's pretty safe to say that planting one's foot in your opponent's testicles was a well-known technique in Europe 500 years ago.

That was Archie Groinwald, who many years ago, looked done and exclaimed,
"WTF?"

He first decided to call it the "Wald" but then went with the "Groin."

It's all about the patenting.
