Ok Adventure-few thoughts-
First-did you put this vidio out as a joke? Lets discuss it-starting with the stance.
It appears that if he was not careful he would hit him self in the jaw with his palm if he was not careful- :o
Secondly-his left arm is vertical in front of his body which prevents him from protection from a stab to his lung/side of neck area.
his legs seem to be next to each other -which messes up balance.
third-no mention at all of striking at the weapon/hand of the attcker..basic and very important.......
I am not a professional knifer but i have had instruction from some highly qualified people
and this will not cut it-(no pun intended)- ;D
Ill leave more professional comments to the guys here who have delt with knife stances and tactics-dont mean to sound negative but there are better vidios out there .
respectfully, WW

The person who came up with this stance is Richard Ryan, and it is taught in his book "Master of the Blade" and video "Gunsite Tactical Edged Weapons 1."  Those would be better sources to see this demonstrated.

I'm not advocating this system, but there really is no danger of hitting your face with  the guard hand.  I've done sparring with this stance and never had that problem.  I prefer having my non-knife hand free for trapping and things.

The guy in the clip does have strange footwork which IMO would decrease mobility and balance.

IMO it is really for fighting against a folder and would not work against a larger knife.

The Ryan palm-on-face stance is a preposterious waste. I would almost bet he no longer uses it?

The kid in the film clip is...well...a kid in a youtube film clip. One of the bigger problems with the world today is kids doing shit on youtube. And other kids seeing it.

That was a general statement.  The vast majority of folders are very small.  Obviously there are large ones like the Cold Steel Vaquero Grande or Espada.

I probably should have said "small knife" instead.

The technique of using your arm as a shield won't work at all once full-sized blades are used, and when the knife gets to Bowie-length it can just cut through the wrist and get to the neck.

It would also have a problem with thrusts.

Get the blade from your throat and kick his ass in simple, powerful moves.

Youtube less, train more.  You'll be amazed what you come up with, all on your own.

Morning Kent-as to use of vidios-what i have been doing is - in regards to vidio training is to work on the mat-doing instruction and taking instruction- then go back to the you tube and attempt to find a similar tactic or group of tacics- compare and if i see one that may fit -go try it- I also use the you tube to find a new tactic   and lastly  just enjoy watching.
Although I dont pass them on i enjoy vidios on straight boxing from the old timers i.e.
Mike T/ Sugar Ray Leonard/ etc etc-
Use of vidios can be helpful (as you say) if  one does not just sit and get memsarized by it.
I know it will not occur but I would be on the vidio even more if I could pull up what Hock
passes on at a seminar-I understand the reasons for him not producing them though.
Lastly-I imagine that some  instructors vidio their classes for in house use as a training tool-i would think that is s great idea-same principle as class room schooling for a football team as a after action report.....anyhow thats my uptake on Vido watching-WW
