The great news about knife training
« on: June 05, 2011, 05:11:06 PM »

The great news about training with a knife is that you can have a terrible program, and the knife-being the knife-you can still succeed. It is unforgiving in action and very forgiving to the poorly trained bearer from a lousy system.

Excellent point Hock. When someone who hasn't had a lot of swimming experience  starts to train for open water swimming, like triathalons, the main thing is to get comfortable in the water. For beginners, the techinique is secondary, just feeling completely at home in the water is the goal. I think it is similar to knife training. Get to the point where the knife just feels like a natural part of your body, with or without incorporating formal drills. IMO that will serve one well.

And, considering that total uncoordinated morons kill people with knives all the time...well then, even bad courses can be successful.

Musashi was right when he said that the greatest swordsman has nothing to fear from the the second greatest. He knows all his moves. He is predictable. The danger to the greatest swordsman is the rank amateur. He knows nothing and doe's not follow the rules and form. He is totally unpredictable.

Was it Musashi who said that?  I saw it attributed to Mark Twain.  I guess Musashi makes more sense.

I remember it being Twain who wrote that as well. Regardless, it's a keeper.

Yep, found it:

Doesn't mean Musashi didn't say it first; just means Twain got it printed. ;D

You can never show "3 or 5 Perfect Things to Defeat any Knife Attacker," like some ignorant or charlatan instructors might sell.

Unarmed vs the knife training sessions are always nothing more than an exercise-workout for possibilities. NO guarantees! They should be labled as such on the beginning.
