I like that they're going to stop wearing camouflage in the Pentagon. Now if the Navy will get rid of those ridiculous navy blue camouflage BDUs that sailors wear around Norfolk.

For the life of me I can't understand what Shinseki was thinking when he 1) took the black beret away from the Rangers and 2) gave it to every soldier. It was like when in kids soccer they give a trophy to everyone on every team.

I don't even know if Shinseki knows what he was thinking.  From what I hear, he's not doing such a great job running the VA these days either.

I made sure to tell everyone this morning that it was "Wear Your Patrol Cap To Work Day".  Being National Guard, most people hadn't heard the word.  I only got the word off of the most reliable information network known to man, FaceBook.

A friend who recently left the Army said it was a decision borne of someone's, either Shinseki's, or someone close to him, regrets at having failed out of any and all schools and selections which would have entitled to allow him to wear a beret under the existing guidelines. If course that is all scuttlebutt, but I had long figured it was one of those "make everyone feel speeee-shalll" things.

They're not effected by the decision.

The reason the beret is TOO HOT for many is that to them it is head gear nothing more.

It was the Beret Stolen from the Rangers to make the ordinary feel special, and they feell what they are and were ordinary and the beret has become to be nothing special to them, just a piece of wool which takes two hands and a mirror to adjust so they look cool.

SF ,Rangers and others who have WON THE RIGHT to Wear Special Berets still wear theirs with pride in every climate and Place on this Planet.

To Bad the Rangers had to lose their distinctive Beret to this test, which failed.
Oh they can look special when in their Class A uniforms, let us just hope they do not have to wear their Beret and Class A uniforms in the Heat.

Velcro patches had no place in the regular Arky as the majority had no reason to remove Unit ID when going into combat anyone.Another experiment which proved a failure for the masses.

God made a cap with a bill for reasons.
One was to keep the sun out of your face.

I'd have to disagree on this one as I like this uniform. Then what do you want the Navy to switch to? I sure don't want the dungarees again as they look very unprofessional. Woodland cammies? Doesn't look right for the waterfront as we are not soldiers. The recent NWUs, as we call it, just looks about right since you got both a professional/tactical appearance and yet not look too much like a soldier. Not only are they more comfortable and keep the body cool, we are also allowed to walk the pier with our sleeves rolled up. The old dungarees/utilities, we are not allowed to. It also has a lot of pockets where I can carry other items. I have more pride now in my uniforms since we switched to the NWU (Navy Working Uniform) a few years ago. However, it could also use some improvement as the buttons tend to fall off unless you add more thread from your sewing kit.

Glad you like them Vic, and I gather they do hide wrinkles and stains, and a standard uniform is better than multiples.
But I still think they're ugly. Now maybe some polos in nice pastel colors and cotton dockers would be nice. ;)

My dad was in the Zumwalt navy.  He said it was hell, and morale was pretty low.  Sailors growing beards, all kinds of stuff.  Kinda how morale was in the Army after Shinseki did his thing with the beret.  What a joke.  There are hundreds of individuals who should never progress beyond commanding a messkit repair battalion.

Kent-yep-sad state of affairs in many officer ranks in all services-I understand the officer Corps is innadated with many regs that if not understood correctly cause problems down in the enlisted ranks- I will say though I have heard of great small unit officer leaders in the Army over in Afganistan-really taking care of the troops.
I have not been there so I cannot say for certainity though-
When I was in Vietnam I was a SSgt-I never had a Lt in my security unit- I reported to a Captain (the S-2)  who was a pilot and always in the air-I reported directly to him when I needed to. The captain had had a lot of flight time near the DMZ and was burned out so they brought him to Danang -nice guy-just tired out-he had continous cases of diarrea and had to land in rice paddies some times to relieve himself-guess that also was PTSD which was not looked at too much those days. Oh well its 2011 and its a different ball game- stay  safe  WW
