Ringside Boxing (Need pro suggestions)
« on: August 12, 2011, 09:43:16 PM »

I'm heading to Ringside (KC, MO) to fight in their national tournament in the 201# category.   I've done my gym work, and I'm packing for the tourney on Sunday.   Start my fights on Wednesday or Thursday (going early to relax and watch some good fight.

Here's what I need from the happy reader:

Strategies and suggestions so I don't get me nose handed to me.    Cartio is a good as I can make it - I've been working like a dog on this aspect.  Rounds are 1.5 minutes and 2 minute in the championship.

Fire away!  It'll be an interesting experience...I'm a fighter, and learning to be a boxer.  Two different games.

Thanks,

The "Masters" Prof

Keep your jab working. Jab, jab, jab. If you watch fights, 8 out of 10 are won by the guy who through the most jabs.

Always keep the knees flexed, which you should already know.  Like MillDog says, work that jab. I can't stress that enough, throw it twice in a row, or three times. Stay loose, and keep moving.  Slip left, slip right, slip forward, stay on the move.  It's harder for the bigger folks, but it can be done.

All good advice-I would add that you should pace yourself-if they are 3 rounds you have to be able to get through the first two-watch the opponent-if he starts to tire work him to try and exhaust him and hurt him bad-make him not want to come out for the next round-good luck WW

Spend 6 months with Jim McCann.
But I guess its too late for that.
Keep us posted and it would be great to have a film (especially if you win!)

On Facebook, Jeff said,

"Took a beating and had a ticket home..."

He will try again next year. I think it was quite an adventure.

My apologies!

The guy that beat me won the belt.   I lost to the champ.    Not close, he whipped my ass.

I need a lot more sparring.

My cardio and conditioning were spot on.  Just not enough "time in the ring".

I'm going to try for golden gloves in Feb.   8)

I weighted in a 195.5 for my fight.   My goal is to walk around at 185 and fight between 185 and 178 - we'll see.

Got some work to do - after a two week vacation (wife just had back surgery)!

Congratulations Professor. You are spot on about sparring. No matter what your cardio is, if you are tense in the ring you will gas out so fast 2 minutes feels like 2 hours. Any videos of the fight?
