Fighting With a Knife
« on: September 27, 2011, 10:52:14 AM »

It seems that I heard the bit about fighting with a knife, in one of your DVDs, Hock, but that phrase also reminds me of a quote from the movie "Spartan", with Val Kilmer.

Kilmer's character says to an edged weapons instructor "Don't you teach 'em knife fighting. Teach 'em to kill. That way, they meet some sonofabitch who studied knife fighting, they send his soul to hell."

Since I've started teaching my soldiers some knife combatives, people have made a few remarks about how I teach knife fighting, or like knife fighting, or I know knife fighting.  My reply is basically that I don't teach knife fighting, I teach how to fight, with a knife.  That way my soldiers won't get their asses kicked by someone who studied knife fighting.

I was watching the Military Quick Kill DVD and I just felt like sharing my thoughts on fighting with knives and other things.  I feel that the phrase "fighting with a knife" is much more encompassing than "knife fighting", and that's what I try to pass along to my squad and my platoon.

The quote from Spartan reminds me of one from the movie,"Ulzanas Raid". Burt Lancaster is a old, grizzled scout leading group of soldiers trying to hunt down an Apache (Ulzana) who jumped the reservationa and is  running around with his braves  killing white folks. After chasing him for about half the movie, the Lt. asks Lancasters character if Ulzana is trying to find a good place to make his stand and fight them. Lancaster answers, " Hell, he doesn't mean to fight us, he means to kill us." Great movie. A knife is  simply a force multiplier. The killing is done by the person.

How about another Lancaster quote:  " Senior, you go tell them that Valdez is coming."
