Another case of relying on tools over skills. The cop gassed way too quickly, and was extremely fortunate to have survived this.

The guy got off the PO for some reason???

The PO did not get away & only got to taze the suspect because he got up of the PO.

I can only comment on what i viewed from the video. I don't see this as a case of over relying on tools at all.

If the attacker was a westler then i think the Officer did ok. So, either the cop was not as bad at gorund work as we think, the attacker was not really interested in pounding the crap out of him or the attacker didnt know his shit.

It makes no sense whatsoever to go toe to toe and play someone elses game. That is not the job of law enforcement. That is why we have force options and that is how we defeat (in theory) the bigger, fitter, faster, stronger and better trained people out there

I didn't have any audio with this video, as this would give me much more insight as to what, if any, verbal directions the officer gave to the suspect.

An officer should never WANT to wrestle with a suspect. Their goal is always to get back up and place the suspect under custody. Ok, that was accomplished. The suspect was on top several times in the encounter. Unless I'm missing something, his offense did nothing damaging to the officer.

The officer was using his legs at different times to keep space between him and the suspect. To those who always slam an officer for being "gassed", I offer you this. You try wrestling on pavement wearing 25 pounds of equipment, a kevlar vest that restricts breathing, in a polyester uniform and jacket, with insufficient sleep for the past week, and see if you get "gassed." It's much different than wrestling on mats, wearing speedo shorts and wrestling shoes, in a 72 degree room.

That's why an officer needs to get back up and not wrestle. Did the officer do a textbook example defense? No. Was the suspect subdued and the officer go home safe to his family at night? Yes. Job accomplished.

You guys still want to argue about whether you need to know how to wrestle or not? Just a little bit of wrestling?

I don't think many people argue that you shouldn't know any wrestling.

It is more that people disagree that wrestling is the most important fighting skill, or the only skill one should learn, or the idea that 90%, no 95%, no 99%, no ALL fights go to the ground.

Keith,

If we were going just by this video it's not a good example of a wrestler triumphing. He did no damage to the officer, and went to jail.

It is important for officers to cover basic wrestling, but only from the standpoint that they need to get back on their feet  a.s.a.p. The problem nowadays is many departments are hooked on bjj, and it's giving officers false confidence on the ground.

I know this because this is exactly what happened to me. I was "hooked" on bjj in the 90's, and got into several altercations that went to the ground. I found myself instinctively getting guard, looking for a submission, etc.,  On several occasions I started getting my ass handed to me until I "woke up" and switched from bjj mode to survival mode.

It is important to have officers do some wrestling, but only with them using techniques that will get the attacker off of them and into an arrest scenario. Looking for submissions while wearing a full gun belt will get you killed.

Wrestling is being used in a generic "catch all" phrase here. Sorry for the confusion.

The fact is he gassed, and it is plainly evident in the video.

As for wearing the bat belt, vest, pavement...blah, blah, blah, I did that for almost two decades in more arrest situations than I can recall. It does not change the fact that he gassed.
