training dummies
« on: October 18, 2004, 03:23:30 AM »

I am planning to construct a striking dummy and I was wondering if anybody had any ideas.  The only plans I have found on the web is the Ultra man dummies on the International Karate connection Association web site.  It looks OK but I want to build something stronger and with arms.  Since I am going to have a back yard soon I am thinking of mountng it in the ground.  Any help would be apreciated since I am not a handy guy. ;D

Check out Hock's "Solo Command & mastery" videos. He shows how to make a war post and a war post with arms which would be perfect for your needs.

If you look up "mook jong", wooden dummy, or even pvc dummy you will find a couple of sites that provide plans.

The IKCA dummy is now made with welded steel pipes, which makes it extremely tough, but you need to know how to weld.

Hope this helps,
Steve

Only 1 reply!  No love for Wild Bill.  Thanks for the advice Szorn.  I would like to get the solo command and mastery tapes but I am low on cash.  I can either get more videos or I can try to get something that will allow me to train better with what I have.

I'm not thinking of a wing chun type dummy.  I want something more like the ultra man or the BOB.  I want something human shaped that I can beat on.  The ultra man and the BOB are just too expensive to buy and they don't seem tough enough to hold up.

I thought that you meant an uke.    ;D

A uke would be a good idea.  I'm thinking of joining the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization.  All I have to do is get the kid to wear a suit made out of old phone books and I'm good to go. :o

By the way, I have a three bedroom house in central Austin.  Anybody need a room mate?

One of Hock's Training Mission DVD's has instructions for making warpost, training dummy.  It will cost about $40-50.  You can also make one out of PVC pipe if you are good with tools and live in an appartment.  Paladin Press has a book on their web site about making homemade training equipment.  You might want to check it out.

By the way, the uke thing, I chipped my assistant instructors tooth by accident the other day while practicing some boxing/panantukan.  Make sure your insurance is paid up! (lol)

Here's a couple of ideas for ya.  They are originally used for sword training, but you may be able to get some ideas for modifying them for your use.

http://www.woodenswords.com/Pell/pell.htm

Even if you can't use them as they are described, they may inspire you to make one of your own.  It just requires a little creativity.  You may also want to check out some back issues of the now defunct MA Training magazine.  There was a guy named Mike Young who wrote a column called "Rock and Roll Home training" which he described ways to make your own training equipment.  He also wrote a book called "Martial Arts Home Training" which described a couple of his more popular home made equipment.

Hope this helps and good luck.

I made an A frame out of 4x4's and appended on pieces of old tires.  I then made holders for fiberglass arms.  The result, I call "Sir Ivan Headache".  He is good for weapons work and empty hand work.  If you like, I will send you a picture.
