Great. I love this argument. Yes, a poke in the eye can sideline someone. It can sideline Joe RBSD guy too. One has to assume that a Professional fighter especially now with the UFC and Pride is pretty well versed at handling himself..street or not.  The guy he is going to run in to on the street is not anywhere close to his skill level. Not within a friggin' mile of it.  He will be handed his ass. Couture can poke you in the eye or kick you in the nuts too. Chances are he will get it past your defense where the chance you'll hit him is minimal. RBSD guys unarmed against guns ,knives and multiple opponents may have a few theories but the reality is a different story. Who do you people think streetfighters are? These are not guys spending hours in the gym and training like a pro fighter they are barbums and troublemakers. Some may be strong and have a trick up their sleeves but they are not anywhere near the level of a Couture or Liddell. if they do spend hours in the gym etc and train as fighters you are no longer talking a "streetfighter".
I have seen a world champion on the mat and guys with tons of experience were handed there hat and that is with the ability to go with whatever they wanted.  It was a joke. Like five year olds against an adult.  Why do RBSD guys insist on mythologizing the streetfighter?
Weapons and multiple opponents? You can train for it but very few when jumped by multiple attackers will not be just plain screwed. Almost everyone in a knife altercation gets cut. Would an RBSD guy perhaps have some training in these areas a sport fighter wouldn't? Sure, but you are probably also nowhere near the skill level of a Pro fighter so it pretty much nullifies that argument.
Is RBSD training worthwhile? Sure, absolutely but don't go around dismissing the abilities of well rounded pro fighters because you learned a knife disarm from a dvd. Or in your first 3 months of RBSD training. If you would get killed by these guys in the ring then you probably can't take them on the street.
In regards to the argument that pro fighters know who they are up against in the ring but not on the street. You don't know who you are up against either RBSD guy and you are also not the skill level of a pro MMA guy. What is your point again?

I think the sport method is good for devoping attributes ,such as timing, conditioning ect. and the RSBD method is good for its pragmatic approach to a given threat. I think both are needed. I am a milwaukee police officer and i supplement my D.A.A.T. training with competitive judo and knockdown karate. a lot of materail overlaps, some does not, but sincere training with an eye for pragmatisim will serve you well.  I have meet "karate" guys who didnt want to learn any groundfighting, I just think "fine, get your ass kicked, I dont care. :D" I ve meet BJJ guys with similar attitudes on striking, ::) whatever!. I for one have a lot of RESPECT for competitive fighters and see value with what the type of training can offer to me in self defense, I just realize its not the final word on self defense.

My own view on eye gouging is that when you attack the eyes it better be the beginning of a furious combination that will render your opponent unconscious.  Anything less than that and your opponent will figure he can gouge your eyes too.  The thing with eye gouges is that they are really easy and require almost no training.  This means that 10 seconds after you start poking my eyes if I am still conscious I have all the training I need to give you the King Lear treatment too.

It's a valid point. You poke a guy in the eye, bite him etc you better be the one to end it. Because if the guy didn't intend on ripping your frigging head off he will after you do that. It is a defense but also a massive escalator as well.

Bjj Does have a place in rea;ity based combat. it has to do in worst worst case senario. But to get to that level of worse case senario is extremely rare. there are few people who are realy fast as well as capable of taking a kick to the balls as well as really really good cobative reflexes. if he is that invicible then maybe you might get some blood shed so to just break his sholder with an arm bar.

But again that is realy rare.
