Katana vs. machine gun
« on: September 08, 2005, 04:43:48 AM »

Here is a nice video clip where they shoot at a katana (Japanese sword) with a machine gun:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TFIQ-7TxMw

The fun starts around 1:10 into the clip when they use a "superslow" camera to film the bullets hit the katana. Some of the bullets are actually SPLIT by the blade! Sure, it's just simple physics - bit it still looks pretty impressive.

In a fight, I'd prefer the machine gun, though...  :)

Never bring a knife to a gunfight comes to mind here.  Was this a TV commercial?  Maybe for Machine Guns Are Us?

Full marks for the gunner - that's a pretty small target to hit!!!

Impressive little clip.  I wonder who the guy in the gi was … hopefully not a maker who had spent many long hours forging that blade!
I'm reminded of all the semi-mystical stuff I've ever heard about Japanese blades, including a 'test' of one blade in which it cut through a machine gun barrel - this seemed to be the machine gun's revenge, eh?  Of course, this kind of ethos is still around; I recall reading a review of Chris Reeve's Special Forces knife (the Yarborough), and the writer said he took a big full power swing at a galvanized fence post to make a point to the SF guys he was teaching, or showing the knife to, or something, and the post took the worst of it, leaving his 'magical' steel untouched.  Echoes of Excaliber. . .
