Post by: Adventure on May 16, 2009, 01:20:45 PM
Do you know anything about this guy?

GM Art Gonzales - Tenio DeCuerdas

http://decuerdas.com/index.html

Grand Master Arthur Gonzalez continues to strive for the promotion of Tenio’s Decuerdas Eskrima Concepts; which happen to be a complete American-Filipino Martial Art. GM Gonzalez's Instructors were Professor Gilbert Tenio, along with the late Chief Master Instructor and Associate Professor John Eliab. GM Gonzalez has taught the Border Patrol, Police, Security Guards and Correctional Officers and various military organizations. He has also taught the Mexican Military and established an Assistant Instructor to instruct in the following programs: a range of varied weapons programs including Knife to Knife Combat, Hand to Knife Combat, Hand to Hand Combat encompassing Dumog and Buno using our Six Key words (Striking, Choking, Locking, Throwing, Sweeping, and Grabbing arts). He also teaches Sentry Removal, PR24 and Baton training for basic arrest and prisoner control tactics along with Long Gun, Short Gun disarms, Gun Retention, and other subjects. GM Tenio also stressed heavily the Hilot healing art as part of his martial art. Grand Master Gonzalez is presently learning Seifukujitsu with Professor James Muro and has rejoined Jujitsu America, Kilohana, and AJJF.

Nothing on Gonzales. But hey there seems to be TWO Grandmasters of Decuerdas.

The late GM Tenio's pics on Van Donk's site show him in a Navy uniform, but I cannot tell if he is a Chief petty officer or just a petty officer 2nd class.

In one photo he is wearing a enlisted uniform in the other he has a chief's uniform, but he has the same rank on in both.....fishy...every fishy.

If you decide to investigate further, donīt be surprised to find more contradictions than facts. The same thing has happened in Pekiti Tirsis Kali etc

The reason I asked is the MMA guy that is sharing the same space as my CrossFit trainer is have this guy up to do a seminar on FMA. I had never heard of him, but thought you guys may. But Hey, with all the different family systems we are never going to know them all.
And I am familiar with the P.T. debate, so it is something like that...

He's a local guy with a BIG business-card/webpage, as 99% of all webpages are. BIg sounding and overblown sounding. (Not this his webpage is so over-the-top.)

I agree with you - that like so many, mnay Filipino martial arts leaders, they need them some Jeannie Craig. Badly.

There is an interesting business angle inside this story. That of Cross Fit. Lots of martial artists are trying to connect up with Cross-fit and some of the local CF owners and interested in connecting up. But these exercise people are naive and can fall for a good line and sales pitch, so that whole learning curve begins again for them.

There are more than that.  Gilbert Tenio's son also inherited the title, and some of his other students now have their own systems/branches IIRC.
