Title: Things other than sticks
Post by: Webby on May 13, 2011, 06:00:11 AM
My mate told me about a guy near beaten senseless with a length of sugar cane brought from a market in South London. I've seen books used as impact weapons in libraries ( gang's of kid's coming in and making a racket and then assaulting staff and other users )
The staff in the lock up wards I worked in carried metal clipboards to use as a shield against sudden attack. Doctor's waiting room's can be places of violence, people rolling up the magazines left one for patent's and using them as an impact tool. Especially the butt end. Chairs can be used as hats in about two seconds.

The list go's on.

rolled up magazines are one of my personal favorivtes
one of my old aikido teachers use to wrap them in electrical tape
when we did multiple opponents for our black belt test
the uke (attackers) would use these tightly wrapped magazines
and really try to hit you, no injuries, but you knew for sure when you got hit!

Newspapers are banned from football games as supporters would fold the paper in half and then half again and so on, ending up with a small, but very solid ' Brick ' held correctly a powerful downward striking impact weapon. They call it a '' Millwall Brick ''.

I've heard stories of hospital cleaner's and Nurses attacked with mop's, brooms, hoovers.

Christmas time a mentally ill man attacked elderly people on a ward with a lump of wood left by a builder. Very nasty injuries.

Good one! I had one instructor that used one of his Mario Bruni shoes to fend off two attackers. Insert smelly foot joke here.

Lamps, candle holders, ...
I am aware of an assault in which the weapon was not the holder, but in fact a large, fat, wax candle, about 4 inches in diameter.

Hi Joe,
Yes that was a crazy one. Guy in his 30's, fit and strong, but not to too big. He stripped off down to his birthday suit and covered himself in soap and water and took some fork's ( he had stolen from another unit while on a visit ) made them into knuckle duster's ( bending them back in themselves ) and then thought he'd attack the staff team as we did a hand over. He was very fast and had planned on being restainted hence the soap. We had a hell of a struggle with him. Everyone was relieved when we got him under control.
I think we got lucky with him only because he had pumped himself up so much before the fight he ran out of gas after a few minutes. If he had been a bit calmer he would have done a lot more damage. Crazy day's at the secure unit.

On occasion we'll train in the woods and one very well trained fellow used a thin tree, while it was still in the ground. That was a painful surprise.  :D

To quote him, "You're looking for the best weapon at hand, not the best weapon you wish you had."

Back in Nov (28th)1999 in the South London area of Thornton Heath. A crazed man ( Eden Strang ) walked into a busy Catholic church of St.Andrews and slashed 11 people with a samurai sword. He was a schizophrenic. The Police were quick on the scene and walked into a blood bath. The mostly elderly worshippers were in a dreadful state. A quick thinking copper grabbed one of the church organ pipe's and hit Strang. This did the trick and he was taken into custody. No-one died, but there were some horrific injuries.

Improvised weapon use at it's best.

I tend to think my one quart Nalgene bottle makes a good improvised weapon.  It's hard lexan plastic, and I usually either have it full of water, or half frozen with ice.  In a pinch, I know I can chuck it at someone for a distraction.
